Faculty Votes To Fire CCRI President By June
President Concerned That Relations With Faculty Have Deteriorated

PROVIDENCE -- Faculty at the Community College of Rhode Island have voted to recommend that President Thomas Sepe be fired by June 30, a year before his three year contract ends.
The vote Friday by the CCRI Faculty Association was 129 to 4. The Board of Governors for Higher Education makes the ultimate decision.
"The faculty feels the president is not taking the college in the right direction," said Marjorie Norquist, president of the faculty association. "There has been a serious lack of communication and trust."
Norquist wouldn't elaborate on why the faculty says it is frustrated by Sepe's management style. Last fall, disagreements about the staffing and operation of CCRI's new Newport campus angered many professors. They said Sepe had selected faculty, rather than deferring those decisions to individual departments.
Norquist also said that Sepe has been slow to fight for more money to hire additional nursing faculty.
"We have lots of evidence" of eroding confidence in Sepe, Norquist said.
Sepe attributed the souring relationship to protracted contract negotiations with the faculty union. He said he has made positive changes at the school, including expanding mandatory testing for all incoming students and requiring remedial classes for student who don't meet a certain standard.
He denies being too slow to hire more nursing faculty, arguing that Gov. Don Carcieri's budget for next year allows more nursing faculty at CCRI but does not include additional money for that purpose.
"A lot of this is due to misunderstandings," he said.
Sepe, 63, said he is concerned that relations with the faculty have deteriorated, but added that he is hopeful they can work together in the future.
