another chair bites the dust?

She was always the Interim Chair. She was never to be permanent.

No, she had regular chair status. The "interim" was dropped from her title a couple of semesters ago. I have taught at USM for 20 years and she is the best chair our department has ever had. She made every situation a win-win situation for all parties involved. She is going to continue teaching but not be our chair (effective today). It is a tremendous loss for our department and for the College of Education and Psychology. I tip my hat to Wanda Maulding. She's a real class act.

I have seen a number of instances in which interim chairs are now permanent chairs, so this would be one of the few cases at USM in which an interim chair was intended to be just that. My experience at USM tells me that this is not so simple.

Why would a department chair step down in March? Such administrative changes normally occur at the end of the semester.

Dr. Smith, this is not what the departmental secretary told me on the phone just a few weeks ago. According to the secretary, Maulding was still interim chair. I agree with the other poster though that leaving in March as chair--if she was not interim--is odd. Then again, Dr. Marquardt as chair of the Political Science Department did this when Dr. McBride took over a few years ago.

Dr. Smith, have you talkd to Dr. Maulding directly?

A few weeks ago? That's time enough around here to destroy an entire program . . . .

Dr. Maulding was indeed the chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Research until yesterday. She originally took the position as an "interim" chair but that status was changed to chair some time ago. I believe that her status was changed from interim chair to chair in the Spring of 2004 but I can't remember for sure. I am, however, absolutely positive that she was chair when she stepped down yesterday to a faculty position. We were so fortunate to have her as chair, even for a short period.
