Today’s “Babe" of the Day is the University of Michigan!!!!!
From the University of Michigan online history:
“The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as one of the first public universities in the nation. It was first established on 1,920 acres of land ceded by the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi people "...for a college at Detroit." The school moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837, when Ann Arbor was only 13 years old. The city had a booming population of 2,000, a courthouse and jail, a bank, four churches and two mills. It had been established in 1824 by two Easterners, John Allen and Elisha Rumsey. The town was named to honor the wives of the founders, Mary Ann Rumsey and Ann Allen, and the natural arbor created by the massive oaks in the area.
“It took four years to build the necessary facilities for the new campus in Ann Arbor. The buildings consisted of four faculty homes and one classroom-dormitory building. (One of the homes is still standing and is now the President's house.) Cows owned by the faculty grazed over much of campus. As late as 1845 the campus was covered in the summer with a crop of wheat, grown by a janitor as part of his remuneration. Faculty families harvested peaches from the orchard of the old Rumsey farm, and a wooden fence ran along the edge of campus to keep University cows in and city cows out.
“In its first year in Ann Arbor, the University had two professors and seven students. There were more Regents (nineteen) than faculty and students combined. The reorganized University did not have a president, but the faculty elected a presiding officer each year from their own ranks.”
While perusing the EagleTalk message board for material to use against the trolls, I ran across a thread on a linked board called “Babe of the Day,” which contains photos of “hot babes” in provocative poses and attire.
That thread got me to thinking: Can I add something like this to the AAUP Website? Of course, I cannot actually post pictures of “hot babes” out of respect for our fine female posters, and I cannot post pictures of “hot studs” out of respect for myself and the esteemed male posters. However, I can post something that is a lot more satisfying to all of us: a brief description and a link to an esteemed, non-SACS probation school’s website.
On the website, one can read about all of the activities that university’s community is engaging in while we are digging out from our mess of Thamesian (or should it be anti-Thamesian?(because he really is a very short man)) proportions. Pictures of academics engaging in teaching, research, and service without fear of email monitoring or random firing! While none of these “Babes of the Day” will be perfect, I am sure they all will look good to me. Maybe they will to you as well.
I will post one per day until I either run out of steam or non-SACS probation schools...whichever comes first.
My nomination for the next babe is the university of IOWA. The president (who has an MD and a PhD) also plays the saxophone and hosts a jazz show on a local radio station. He declared last year the "Year of the arts and humanities." This year is the year of something like "community service." (Both of thiese are areas that Shelby doesn't even know exist.) Note that he isn't declaring it the year of economic development.

Could it be that the prez at Iowa might realize that a university that has strong programs in the arts & humanities, coupled with a commitment to community service, is going to promote the sort of environment that attracts top businesses & industries?
if you look at iowa's alumni magazine you'll see they have ads emphasizing the role of the arts and humanities in attracting businesses. iowa--where women read next year's books and wear last year's clothes.
:) I hail from the state of Ohio (once I transplanted there, have moved on since) and we had a saying about UM, north till ya smell it, west till ya step in it!
Michigan does have an excellant program, gotta admit it was a good choice for our babe today.
Now, just pick OSU and this buckeye will be happy.

After today's news in The Chronicle about OSU's gutsy move for academic integrity, I might have to second that nomination Patti.
"A geography professor at Oklahoma State University at Stillwater who plagiarized numerous times over his long career will no longer be allowed to teach at the institution after a university investigation confirmed allegations that were first revealed in The Chronicle."
Today's article, "Oklahoma State University Bars Plagiarist Professor from Classroom" references one from mid--December, "Four Academic Plagiarists You've Never Heard Of: How many more are out there?" where the professor in question offers the following defense:
"complaints may have been motivated by 'academic jealousy' "
Do they teach this stuff in lightweight defense school?
Interesting to note also is, "He earned a Ph.D. in geography in 1971 and landed a job on the faculty there. He never left." Part of why we send our graduate students out into the world is so that they will learn more about academia and so our own institutions will not become in-bred.
Everyone knows the Pokes Choke! That's Oklahoma State for you. I nominate the University of Oklahoma for consideration for the Babe of the Day at some point. President David Boren is a shining example of a president totally devoted to shared governance.
