The students that worked in Thames lab were told that what ever they did, make sure Thames did not see them M-F 8-5 either not working or not in class.  Those couches in the main lobby were completely off limit.  He would blow a gasket if he thought someone in his lab was not working and goofing off.  What did you get in return for working in such conditions?  The promise that he would call one of many industry contacts and get you a high paying job.

Isn't it interesting that neither Clyde nor Albert has ever attempted, in any serious way, to defend Shelby?  The fact that they do not (cannot?) says a great deal.  One value of dealing with such trolls, in fact, is that we are thereby encouraging them to leave a permanent written record of how little can truly be said of any substance in behalf of Shelby Thames.  Instead, we get Clyde revealing that he resents being flunked and that he thinks polymer science is the essence of human knowledge.  (Oops!  I forgot: he's not interested in knowledge, just in making Big Bucks.)

Scientists and engineers often get higher paying jobs and early promotions "out of the gate" but remember who they're reporting to?  Upper level managers with liberal arts undergraduate backgrounds and MBAs!

Fpm, you have hit the nail on the head with you description of thames.  The guy is a prima dona (sp?). For those who worked for thames, to be called to thames' office sent was awful and generally never a good thing.   And with a couple of exceptions the brightest grad students never chose to work for him, which is what I have feared would happen to USM as a whole were he chose.  I don't remember him parking in the handicap space outside the building, but he did call ahead to have one of the lab assistants or grad students park his car for him so he would not have to walk. I honestly believe that he wanted the polymer faculty to give him a special parking place, which did not happen during my tenure (Come to think of it the best way to annoy thames is for people to park in the president's parking space beside the Dome, if it still exists).

The students working 8-5 crap was because thames wanted to be seen as an industrial titan, but we all can see now why he never actually was in industry.

Can a midget be a titan?  (Sorry . . .)

Is a "jumbo shrimp" a great big shrimp or an itty-bitty jumbo?

The recent flap about the USM airplane, along with your George Carlin posting name, reminds me of my favorite George Carlin line: "Did you say get on the airplane? I might get in the airpane, but I'm sure not going to get on the airplane."
