See the latest in the online HA on the ED program, article by KW.  Malone and Co. talk like they are here to stay at least through 2015.  For some reason, wouldn't let me copy and paste link.

No one ever asks what people actually do with these degrees?  Most students are off campus.  I've seen a lot in my day, and this place is a joke.

Hmmm... Then Shelby will be president until he's 80 years old? I can't imagine that KM would last that long with his patchwork job description without SFT in the driver's seat...

Anyone ever heard of this program before?  Talk about a way to circumvent accreditation standards in the Business College.

From the article:

Classes in the executive master of science degree in economic development program, which began last year, involve "in-person" meetings at off-campus sites. In addition to the Gulf Park campus, meetings in 2005 will also be held at George Mason University in Washington, D.C., and at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, N.C.

Meetings?  When I was in high school we had field trips. When I was in graduate school we had classes.  When I taught in graduate school we had seminars.   When I was in industry we had meetings.

Oh yes, USM's as yet undisclosed plan is the corporate university model...

Malone on the College of Business in today's HA article: "Their business model is to run their operation off tuition dollars," Malone said. "They don't do grants, they don't do a significant number of contracts, they pretty much teach and publish basic research but very seldom does anybody pay (the college) to do the research."

I think having the COO of the USM-GC campus and a professor?!?! make this sort of derisive comment in the newspaper is a perfect example of contumacious behavior. Given Toots Malone's rapid ascension in the academic world, I can't help wondering if a review is warranted in his case.

Malone:  "Economic development is increasingly technology-driven, involves workforce training and an alignment with the College of Science and Technology 'made sense.'"

Clarion Ledger 2/24:  "Economics Incentives Bill Dies.  A $24 million package of incentives to lure high-tech companies to Mississippi died Wednesday when the House failed to consider the bill."

I know, it's quite amazing, isn't it?  That's how you know that Ken Malone is no academician!

Don't all of you just hate it when something good is written about your university?

So the HA article was using headcount. Somebody taking one course counts as a student. Real enrollment uses FTE Check my math, but there's not much full time work going on. Disingenuous, or somebody just forgot to explain??
