That's good news for USM. It means we will be treated fairly in the interim. Also of note is the fact that a more recent president who shall not be named was not selected. Maybe there is hope for the IHL.

Maybe it also means State will be treated fairly (even in their own eyes) and get a president they think they want this time.
Dr, Lucas should have been named to this position years ago.

Dr. Lucas doesn't want a position that is going to be active for more than six months because he certainly doesn't want to fall into the 2-for-1 payback to PERS.
When the "new" commissioner format was devised by the all-wise IHL board, Lucas was already enjoying his 13th checks (which at his level of pay probably exceed what the average faculty member gets in base pension, even without a bunch of years of accrual).
The real point is what I posted on the old Fireshelby board: Meredith cannot & could not be trusted. (I'd call him a snake-in-the-grass, but that would be a slam against honest, hardworking reptiles.) There is a reason that Khayat is chancellor at Ole Miss & not Meredith. Tom is not regarded any more highly in Oxford than he is in Starkville, Hattiesburg, or (now, it seems) in Jackson.
Somebody has to stir the pot around here. Otherwise, things start sticking to the bottom & the gumbo will be ruined.
The IHL board learned much from the SFT experiment & even more from the Foglesong experiment. It's taking longer than they wanted, but they'll get everything sorted out soon.

Y'all have gotten complacent. Wake up.
Fire Martha!
In this country we sure love rewarding those who make it to the top with golden parachutes. I hope that one day USM allows me to hang out in a plush office and wear a bowtie while they pay me a ton of cash.

PERS isn't a golden parachute. A chunk of every state employee's paycheck is withheld every month & it isn't optional. Generally speaking, when a person has been in the system for around 34-35 years, s/he reaches a "point of diminishing returns" -- their potential pension is greater than their working take-home. AFK worked longer than that, so he actually "lost money" until he finally retired.
That's the reason I don't think we'll see Tom Meredith magically appear at any state institution unless its a 50% salaried position (obviously, he won't get mere adjunct pay) to teach some vaporous higher education administration course & "advise" a couple of similarly vaporous graduate students.

I wasn't referring to PERS. I was referring to the fact that lucas has had a plush job at USM since stepping down as president. shelby is in a similar position. Since going back to his first love (i.e., the classroom), he hasn't taught a single class. Once folks reach a certain level of achievement it seems they are then given plush/do nothing high paying jobs to ride out their twilight years.

Point taken. I think that isn't exactly a "golden parachute," although that is probably true in Shelby's case. I always understood "golden parachute" to be something that applied when someone bailed under adverse circumstances.
Plus, using the PERS "50%" rule, a former university president could still tack down over $100K annually with the gimme job. It is also extended to politicians. (During the election, I noticed that former Gov. Musgrove listed "part-time professor" at Ole Miss. I suspect his "part-time" salary was more than a good many full-time profs earn.)
