Post Info TOPIC: Cerebral Babe of the Week Nominations

Cerebral Babe of the Week Nominations
Permalink Closed

While we're dishing out recognition,  why not also have a Cerebral Babe of the Week?

I hereby nominate LVN, Truth4USM, and Emma for the initial honor:

AAUP-USM Cerebral Babe of the Week for the week of February 28, 2005.

Perhaps those who are facile at setting up polls will help out,  and the diploma designer for BOGUS will craft an appropriately dignified certificate memorializing the honor.

You're being hypersensitive.  This is about brains and wit,  and proposed in good humor.  Would it make you feel better if the nominees weren't restricted to the fair sex?  "Cerebral Babe" isn't necessarily gender-specific.  Let's see if this helps--I hereby add to the list of nominees for Cerebral Babe of the Week,  drum roll.....

Invictus and Stinky Cheese Man

Why go the Heffner route?  Why not institute the MB Cerebral Krewe?  You could have weekly nominations for King and Queen.  They could toss yet more bon mots from the cyber float.

Capital idea.  So be it. Mr. Hefner herewith retracts his earlier proposal,  but not before issuing an executive fiat declaring LVN as the first and only AAUP-USM Cerebral Babe of the Week.

Congrats, huzzahs, and bon mots to LVN!

Well, although I'm still in shock, let's not forget that at least the babe thing was awarded to a grandmother, and you don't see that everyday!!

I take this as LVN's acceptance of the babe of the week award. Last evening there was a problem with use of the term bimbo.

I didn't say I accepted it, I said I was surprised by it. Was this whole thing a trap? Please explain yourself, black ink, double-spaced on one side of the paper only. Be sure your name and the name of this class are in the upper right-hand corner. Spelling counts.
I'll be out for a while. Talk quietly among yourselves.

For Pete's sake,  there's no parallel whatever to Summers'  ridiculous comments at Harvard.  In fact, in addition to the obviously humorous intent here, recognizing an individual for her (or his) intellect can hardly be construed as insulting, politically incorrect,  or sexist.  If anything,  it's the exact opposite of Summers' ill advised remarks.  I apologize for the rant, but just couldn't control myself.  Congratulations LVN, on this singular, august honor.  I'm sure your certificate is already in the mail.

Thank you, Miss I. Actually I'm not either. There is an unkind edge to this whole thing, although I hope I'm wrong.

I just re-read all the posts in this thread and didn't see anything that could be remotely construed as "unkind,"  although the comment from "Lurker" seemed to have a snide tone.  Given the typically collegial spirit  of most regulars here,  I think the benefit of the doubt is in order.  If someone wanted to characterize me as cerebral, or a babe, or both,  I'd graciously accept.  There was some uncharacteristic  ugliness on other threads earlier,  and I hope that's over.  As someone else  said yesterday, quoting Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?"

As I said, I'm happy to be wrong. I just didn't understand the connection to the "bimbo" remarks of yesterday. It was such a set-up, I was wary. Remember I may be cerebral but I can also be somewhat dense and very paranoid.

Pointing out that "Last evening there was a problem with use of the term bimbo" was snide? You think that did not present a problem?

Snide was a poor choice of words, and I apologize for using that characterization.  I shouldn't have imputed tone or motive to your comment.  I will say, in the way of explanation, that your post seemed to connect, or even equate  "bimbo,"  which I take to be a pejorative term, with "babe,"  which I would call a complimentary term.  In my world, babe is a modern slang expression for pretty, or very attractive, or something of the sort.  This is my own perspective of course,  but I think bimbo is an offensive term,  and babe, used in the proper context,  is not.  In other words,  I see no inconsistency in expressing an aversion to the term "bimbo," while accepting the term "babe."  That's all.

Save the white-out for the computer monitor screen. Emma can have her very own certificate.

And so can Miss I

Well I did nominate you Truth, before the uproar commenced (see my first post).  In my book, you'll always be a cerebral babe,  BOGUS certificate or not.

How do we know that, hidden behind these beautiful noms, is an ugly male face? In those cases, maybe a "Bozo" of the week would be more appropriate.

I know, HRM, and I'm deeply honored.  I just want to have a certificate to show to all of my colleagues at Vandy!

Vanderbilt is sometimes "The Harvard of the South." In view of the presidential controversy at Harvard, I trust you are not going to suggest that the "babe" awards be given out at Vanderbilt.

Well, I can think of a couple of gentlemen on the USM campus I would consider a "babe" -- but they'll never know. I'm afraid the Bozo designation would start even more fights, you know how competitive they can be [sexist generalization permitted to mothers of sons.]
