USM was mentioned in the Feb. 21 edition of the Ole Miss' Daily Mississippian. Here is what it said:
"Walt Cain, Student Government Association President of the University of Southern Mississippi, said holding statewide elections on a common date would bolster media attention for the universities.
Cain said media coverage would be beneficial to students. Important student issues would be presented to the public and to state officials.
He said media coverage could play a large role in influencing the IHL Board’s decisions that would affect students.
“If we can communicate that our grievances are universal, there will probably be a movement by the Board to address it as a blanket issue, rather than as an isolated problem," Cain said.
I don't understand what is meant by " . . media coverage could play a large role in influencing the IHL Board's decisions that would affect students."
Most likely it would bolster media attention for Walt Cain.
As far as "legislative attention," yeah, it would give him more name recognition when he runs for the Legislature...
Something tells me that aside from tuition concerns, there aren't a lot of truly common issues between the student bodies of the three universities. Something tells me that the student body at Ole Miss would feel it had more in common with other SEC institutions than with the "WalMart of Higher Education" down in Hattiesburg.
