You're looking for positive things? The most positive thing I can add to the list is that I have a much greater appreciation of the USM that existed two years ago. I'll bet most faculty feel the same.

Hear, hear, Retro. Mr. Wonderful, I nominate this simple yet powerful observation from Retro...

Nitchampburg (also known as "Nitwitchampburg" on the msg board): the clever "instant tradition" title given by the USM Sports Marketing Dept. to the basketball tailgaiting area. It's supposed to represent the NIT championship that USM won back in '87, but it ends up sounding like a Nazi death camp or some lice removal product, IMHO.
"Green" paint: SFT's claim to economic development fame is his "non-stinky" soybean-based paint that is supposed to be environmentally friendly.
Don't know which Dana Thames deal you're referring to...perhaps other board regulars could help?

Log truck references to Roy Klumb, current IHL board president (his family owns a company called--no kidding--Klumb Lumber).
I don't know who started the Dome Gnome reference re: SFT, but I remember that Fire Shelby had it on the original FS website from the very beginning (that's the first I'd heard of it). Personally, I always thought SFT looked more like a bullfrog, but that doesn't rhyme w/ Dome.

ha ha ha....that is why I got confused. I thought people were referring to hattiesburg as some kind of Nazi camp...when someone said tailgating it threw that theory out the window....
Thanks for all of the other info as well.
There was another post in this thread talking about Dana firing everyone and hiring a bunch of new people...that is what I was talking about...but it doesn't seem like people keep a very close watch on her actions...they should!!
Progress . . . . . progress at USM . . . . . progress at USM over the past two years. I'd say that about the best thing that has happened at USM is that many faculty members felt compelled to install a computer in their home lest their office security be violated.
One good thing that has happened at USM is used to worry that our school might be placed on SACS probation. Now I don't have to worry about that anymore because it has already happened!

Or to put it another way: "In this world, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant." Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey.

I've always loved that quote. But my ideal university president is smart AND pleasant.
Another positive outcome is that the level of cognitive dissonance has been reduced for those who chose to leave USM over the past few years and might have otherwise questioned their decision.
Dana's shallow attitude in firing a couple of stellar faculty members caused many to seek other employment as quickly as possible and others took early retirements. The faculty was outraged and saddened. The smart ones fled. That is one quiet USM degreeded department. But maybe by being quiet and hiring as many of their own as possible - it stays all in the family.
Faculty members feel much less pressure to develop a basic research program they have more time to engage in private consulting. Less stress. More money. A nice change for the better.
