Excerpt:

Thames said he's going to continue to do what's best for USM. When asked if his remaining in the president's post is in the best interest of the university, Thames responded, "I'm going to continue to do my job."

Thames also said he, as well as the faculty and staff, have done a good job. "I could have improved. I could do things differently," he said. "Anybody can always improve, but I don't think I can give myself an F."

USM senior Carrie Harper said she doesn't understand why Thames insists on retaining his position.

"Even if Dr. Thames is a very good president, I would think that with so few people supporting him, he could get very little done," said the 23-year-old English major from Laurel.

Nice picture from the article - ugh.  Looks like a health problem to me - a mental health problem.

He does not look well. He does not act like a well person. If he does resign for health reasons, it would be good for him and good for his family.
Btw, someone near & dear to me began to have personality changes a couple of years prior to a heart attack. There was serious arterial blockage, which probably affected brain function. Then after the bypass surgery, there was more personality change and judgement was seriously affected, to the point that their marriage was destroyed. I'm not medically trained but I wonder if something like that is underway here? The bad part is, the person doesn't realize anything is wrong.

CSL -- are you saying that maybe Thames has been having heart problems for over 25 years?

I apologize if two responses show up -- I typed one and it vanished into the Somewhere.

Anyway, I have no idea what the long-term state of SFT's heart (physical, not metaphorical) is, someone with medical knowledge could comment. I just think he looks ill, and would do himself and his family a favor if he really did retire for health problems.
