While i have, up until now, refrained from posting on this board all i can say at this point is that i am completely dismayed at the lack of action by the IHL board today - i honestly believed that finally they would have the backbone to do something about SFTs tenure as president of USM. I find myself, regretably, in a position where i have no choice but to start applying for academic positions elsewhere. USM will not survive much longer under SFTs reign.
I can't help but wonder what it means that SFT was never invited into the meeting. Did the Board have no questions for him? Maybe they already had their answers? They didn't even feel the need to call him in to tell him to behave like so many times before. Could it be that they didn't need to talk to him because they don't plan for him to be around much longer? There is no use in chewing someone out or asking them for their side of the story when you are going to get rid of them anyway. It just seems strange that he wouldn't be asked to come in. Maybe this is a good sign?
Well, we all knew that no action from the IHL was an option. So, we keep on keeping on.
Although I can't place the C. S. Lewis quote cited yesterday, here's another from an essay called "The Inner Ring," but which Lewis means those people who have all the influence in society. I think Lewis supplies a good reminder of what will win in the end:
"The quest of the Inner Ring will break your hearts unless you break it. But if you break it, a surprising result will follow. If in your working hours you make the work your end, you will presently find yourself all unawares inside the only circle in your profession that really matters. You will be one of the sound craftsmen, and other sound craftsmen will know it. This group of craftsmen will be no means coincide with the Inner Ring or the Important People or People in the Know. It will not shape that professional policy or work up that professional influence which fights for the profession as a whole against the public, nor will it lead to those periodic scandals and crises which the Inner Ring produces. But it will do those things which that profession exists to do and will in the long run be responsible for all the respect which that profession enjoys and which the speeches and advertisements cannot maintain."
Thanks to all my colleagues who have been patiently working away at their work all this time. We do matter.
But this still doesn't tell us what the Board's intentions were. The Board may not think much of Thames at this point, but that doesn't prevent him from being useful to them--if their goal is to destroy USM.
Even if the Board is planning to push Thames out in a little while, in a face-saving manner, it won't do USM a whole lot of good unless people at USM know that it's going to happen. Klumb's utterances, along with his dodging and weaving about Thames' contract on WDAM, don't prove anything. Klumb could be doding and weaving because he plans to give Thames an extension, not because he plans not to.
What will Thames do, over the next month? If he thinks the Board has given him the green light he'll resume the destruction immediately and vigorously. Immediately, as in tomorrow.
The fact that KW had the guts and intellect to add the "I'm having fun" citation to the headlines of the decision. I thought that was brilliant for the obvious reasons considering the reading audience. Thames's quotation just rub salt into what I hope are becoming new wounds for some of the people out there (mine are way toooooo old).
I - I of all people - believe that SFT and those of the idots on the IHL - are in a saving face mode. I don't believe this episode ended today - by a long shot!!!
I think Newton's response spoke volumes and believe once she becomes president, we will see another side of that board.
Finally, how many days until the Klumb reign of terror is over as the IHL "spokesperson". That, in and of itself, is worth celebrating (in Hattiesburg btw, instead of another state).
NO Freak'n Quarter. Not yesterday, not today, and not tomorrow!
If the Board wanted to keep him around it seems like they would have included him in the meeting, told him to behave, told him who to fire/blame it on, and then after the meeting Klumb would have some lame thing to say like - now that we have talked with Thames everything has been cleared up blah blah... At least that seems to be how it has gone in the past. I still am suspicious about him being excluded this time.
Didn't someone report that the IHL Board discussed personnel issues at USM for 90 minutes? For an hour and one-half they spent just on USM personnel issues? This had to be one heck of a disucussion and or debate.
I wonder how long they discussed the "Black Friday" memo and SFT's ordered apology to CoB faculty and Doty? 90 minutes? They almost had to debate firing SFT for this length of time. Anyone think?
Well said, Jameela. Through this, my respect for the USM faculty has risen. They care enough to not only keep performing well, but to continue to fight against all odds against what they know is hurting the school.

Thanks! I hope no one took the quotation as a sign that we should not do our own work AND do all in our power to change the situation as USM. We're all going to be very tired before this is over, but it's our duty as professional academics to stand up for truth and integrity.
I have no inside info to go on with this, just a hunch.
I think the IHL Board decided that instead of a messy university presidential firing and all the bad publicity it would bring, they would wait 60 days when SFT is reviewed, and announce they are beginning a new search for a president.
In the South, saving face is very important. Any thoughts on this?

This positive counts double, since it's his editor at the paper who most likely composed the title. There are more allies than we see.
