Can he be more condescending?  In discussing efforts to get USM off of accreditation probation:

"We're working very hard to make it go away and it's fixable and our people are being very good about helping," Thames said. "They're chipping in and we're making headway. It's going to be taken care of."

A real red-blooded American male might have said these words instead:

I'm sorry that I ignored the SACS warnings for the first two years of my presidency.  I'm sorry that even after being put on SACS probation I encouraged new programs that would jeopardize the university's chances of getting off probation in a year.  I'm sorry that my management philosophy is antithetical to the ways that truly world class universites operate.  I'm sorry that I am using the faculty to cover my deficiencies while I continue to disparage them at every opportunity.  I'm sorry that I lied to the board and am getting caught in my own web of deceit and incompetence.  I'm sorry that I just don't get it.

Make it go away?  You don't make a SACS probation just go away. Yes, you fix it, but in my humble perspective, it should have never been broken. Yes, Dr. Thames, its going to be taken care of, one with you gone, two with faculty and others busting their hineys to fix it.

The clip says SFT's full interview will be broadcast this Sunday at 5:30 on WTOK, a station that you can't even get in Hattiesburg. The audience is Jackson. SFT hasn't been this worried since last March.

Whatever happened to Thames' promise that he'd "fix it"?  I know who is fixing it.

A Hattiesburg dentist used to have this sign in his office: "IGNORE YOUR TEETH AND THEY'LL GO AWAY."  Maybe the IHL needs such a sign in their conference room: "IGNORE USM AND IT'll GO AWAY - FOREVER"

WTOK is a Meridian station.

I just watched the clip and the very thought of my university desparate to defend its academic reputation makes my stomach churn!!  I went to USM because my major was one of the best programs in the nation, despite coming from a strong background at another school and with opportunities to go basically anywhere, I chose USM.  Now this is what we've come to - a bunch of administrative nitwits who think bigger is better and academic reputation is merely an incident of being a big university!!  Good gracious!
