Just received this response from an alumni board member, to whom I had sent a copy of the HA article about Crofts censuring Shelby:
TAKE ME OFF YOUR MAILING LIST. I DON’T APPRECIATE YOUR TACTICS AND PLANNED ATTACK ON DR. THAMES. IF ANYONE IS CAUSING CHAOS AT USM, IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU.
Here was my reply:
Sorry, but if you are on the USM Alumni board it is part of your job to listen to the opinions of people concerned about the university, even if you disagree with them.
==========================================
At least this person, however, did reply, which is more than I can say about most of the people to whom I have written about USM!
What a stupid response from a person who is supposed to care about the well being of this university. To think that we have people on the Alumni Board who respond in that manner. Definitely a Lost person. Stupid is as stupid does.
You should have posted the name of the alumni board member. They need to be held accountable. Notice that this person is not concerned with support for the university. This person is concerned with support for an individual.
It was not difficult for me to drop my membership in the Alumni Association 2 1/2 years ago when the handwriting went up on the wall. I never had anything in common with the frat boys when I was a student & I sure don't have anything in common with them now that they're middle-aged.

My word, what a rude response for an alumni board member to send to someone such as Mr. Evans who went to the trouble to write. I hope the tone of that response is not representative of your other alumni.

Danny mitchell is a graphic artist and head of the Godwin Group -- just got an award from CoAL dmitchell@godwin.com -- I had dinner with him and he seemed like a pretty good guy.
billy hewes is so far from being anywhere near sympathetic to faculty hewesb@nationwide.com,
Margie Heltzel is a student or recent graduate from USM who worked on Chris Moore's campaign for SGA president when he ran against Jared Loftus. She may not be too involved in the campaign either for or against SFT.

And it probably doesn't stop more than a few faculty members from purchasing insurance from Nationwide. Obviously, if the "market" didn't pay off, they wouldn't spend the money on the flyers.

Well, here's another little interesting tidbit for you. When you become an alum, one of the benefits they tout is an "@usmalumni.net" email account. Not one of the board members appears to be using this "fantastic benefit."
I think you should out the board member who sent that response. Alums (and those of us soon to be alums) deserve to know what kind of board member sends an alumnus that kind of message. Great for fundraising, no doubt.

Forgive me here, but this alumni doesn't think that what Thames has done and continues to do isn't causing chaos? I can see the forest for the trees as I live out of state. Lets see, Thames has managed to put USM on SACS probation, 1st time in 20 years, he has driven away some awesome professors (from what I have been told, no personal experience), he has all but destroyed the library--no funds for books my ass (what did he do with the money?). This person is now biting the hand of the very people he/she got their degree from. Oh yeah, makes perfect sense to me NOT!
What does this alumni think should be happening, the facutly at USM bend over, spread their cheeks and have a ready supply of vaseline? Face it, that is what is going to happen if Thames is allowed to remain in office to continue his pillage of USM.

I think this is an old list. Some of these have rolled off the board after their terms expired and new ones have been added.

Oh can't you please give us a little clue, like initials, as to the writer of this response. That way, we can all send him/her lots and lots of mail. I think that would be delightful.
My exchanges with the Alumni Board member have taken an unexpected turn. You may remember that I told him that part of his job was to listen to opinions with which he disagrees. Here was his response, plus my reply:
I’VE JUST FORMALLY DISSAGREED!
Thanks! I respect you for at least taking the time to respond!
================================
I THOUGHT he would realize that I was trying to pay him a compliment in my reply, but apparently not. Here is our latest exhange:
I HOPE THAT YOU FIND SOLACE—THIS ALL MUST BE TERRIBLY DISTRACTING FROM WHAT I ASSUME YOU LOVE TO DO.
What I love to do is teach, do research, serve my community. It is indeed distracting to see a great university being destroyed (or "destructed," as Roy Klumb would say). You must be living in an air-tight bubble if you can't see what more than 90% of the faculty and the vast majority of outside observers can plainly perceive: Shelby Thames is wrecking a fine school. . . . [I have omitted here a sentence that would reveal the Board member's identity, since I don't want him to be spammed.] I suspect that you were appointed to the Alumni Board precisely BECAUSE you are a water-carrier for SFT. For what it's worth (not much, I'm sure), whatever respect I had for you vanished with this latest e-mail.
Latest response from Alumni Board member. It seems that I may have misinterpreted as sarcasm what may have been intended sincerely. If so, I am genuinely very sorry:
Well, you obviously have a real problem. I was trying to sympathize with you and you chose to turn on me in an instant. Please don’t respond. I don’t care to carry on a conversation with you are going to be so venomous.

MY REPLY:
I'm sincerely sorry if I misinterpreted your comments.
Well, we know it isn't Hewes. I have a feeling that he would have a difficult time coming up with the word "venomous," much less spelling it correctly.
Well, some good news for a change! Here's a response I just received from a DIFFERENT member of the alumni board:
Thank you for forwarding this [i.e., an article from the HA] to me. I am extremely concerned about the state of our university and am closely following these recent developments.

Oh please, and you're not? And the people on this board are not? Practice what you preach buddy. You do not care about the university and no one posting on this board does.
