The Nuclear Option - MAD
Permalink Closed

If the HIL fails to take appropriate action on Thursday, one option available to the faculty is the academic counterpart to what was described as the nuclear option during the cold war era. Specifically, the only power the faculty has over the IHL is the power to deliver to the IHL an unaccredited university. The IHL undoubtely fears such an occurrence. By disbanding all committees that pertain to curriculum, and by reporting all SACS violations publically, the faculty can extend the probation. This would increase the likelihood of subsequent deaccreditation should the IHL continue to take appropriate action. Highlighting violations of SACS critieria, and the lack of faculty input, would surely cause the IHL to wonder if they can afford to continue the path they have taken.

It is unlikely the college board would want to be handed an unoccupied multi-million-dollar campus.

Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is a bad idea. We faculty are doing what it takes, despite our incompetent administration, to get the school properly reaccredited. If that effort fails, it won't be the faculy's fault. Blame will rest squarely at the Dome. Remember the old saying, a fish rots from its head.

If the Board keeps Thames in power when he poses a clear and present danger to accreditation, refusal to serve on university committees would be a highly appropriate response.

Several of Thames' very worst moves (such as the relocation of the Economic Development program, the push for an Executive/'hybrid" MBA, and the conferral of faculty titles on administrative hires) deliberately circumvented the required committee process.

Another instance of the Thames regime at work is Joan Exline's decision to address SACS probation with her hand-picked assessment people (whoever they are) while keeping her operation secret from the committees that are responsible for preparing for the next site visit from SACS.

I've heard that Exline is busy fabricating false data for the SACS report. Heaven help us.

Well, if Exline takes her boss as her role model...
