We disagree that the public should have been shut out of knowing what's at stake in the matter.
No other Mississippi public university has received SACS probation in more than 20 years, according to College Board records. If Southern Miss loses its accreditation, the damage to the university and the community which relies on the university would be profound.
Southern Miss President Shelby F. Thames was forwarded a copy of Grimes' letter on Feb. 3. When questioned about it, Thames said he wouldn't do anything to jeopardize Southern Miss' accreditation. Why, then, did it take nearly a week and a stern warning from Crofts before he issued a statement backing away from Grimes' directive?
Internal politics are often of little interest to the public. But when internal moves at a public institution can potentially harm the school and the economy, taxpayers need to know what's happening.
An incredibly well-written and effective editorial - one that the average person will understand. And very well timed too. This is a late Christmas present if I ever saw one.
And when I say "average person" I am referring to the majority of people who simply are not familiar with the way universities operate internally, or how accreditation works.
How can we make sure Crofts and the IHL see this? Do we have Croft's direct email address? I'm skeptical of sending things through Ms. Sharpe with the hopes it finds its way to the other folks...
This on top of Kevin Walter's opening paragraph on Saturday, repeated in the SH on Sunday:
The state College Board's interim commissioner says the University of Southern Mississippi risked losing its overall accreditation and an almost certain loss of accreditation for its College of Business if instructions from interim provost Jay Grimes had been followed by business dean Harold Doty.
could not come at a more opportune time. Now the question is when is the CL going to weigh in...

University of Southern Mississippi President Shelby Thames says he's not considering retirement. "Why would I retire?" asks Thames, who turns 69 in August.
But the controversial USM president — and the College Board — should be looking toward his retirement.
The USM Faculty Senate voted 39-2 to ask the College Board to begin searching for his successor

I guess you mean "slurs." No editorial in any newspaper is signed. It is assumed that it is written by the editorial page editor, or a board. The HA's editorial page editor is named Rich Campbell. The paper is not trying to be anonymous.
By the way, apparently you forgot that the loudest voice calling for public disclosure during the Glamser-Stringer situation, was none other than Shelby Thames. You need to brush up on your history.
The bees don't gather pollen on the USM campus without SFT's knowledge and permission. This whole Grimes debacle is his baby.

You seem to be unaware of the way that daily newspapers handle editorials.
Perhaps, too, you don't realize that the local newspaper, in a town the size of Hattiesburg, rarely do anything to antagonize the local establishment--which includes the administration of the loclal university.
The person you ought to be asking questions about is Shelby Thames. How did he manage to antagonize the editorial board of the Hattiesburg American? That is really, really hard for a university president to do.
But then it is really, really hard for the president of a national university to screw up so badly that the institution gets put on probation by its accrediting body--and Thames has managed to do that, too.

I am "happy" that a school I care about and many of my friends' careers are in jeapordy? Sheesh. . . And, I don't think my old department caused the situation. I think the administration's lack of attention and lack of leadership caused the situation."
Well, you know I'm a true blue friend because I liked you BEFORE I knew how influential you were!

It is called an "editorial," MF. (Why do these trolls keep picking aliases that make such great acronyms?) It is written by the staff of the paper. I thought most folks who've completed the 7th grade knew that.
Will the USM department responsible for this uneducated person please stand up? Somebody has to take credit for it & I don't think there really are that many polymer science graduates running around...

I wonder what hand you have played in all these letters to the newspapers?"
While Rich Campbell as opinions editor may well have written this, he is speaking for the editorial board, which is made up of editors and several community members, thus the repeated use of "we" throughout. No names are signed because it is understood to be from the editorial board.

It's great to be powerful. I just explained to the MegaCats that I was influential and now I demand some respect, etc. etc. They looked suitably impressed, rolled over, and went back to their Power Naps. Sic transit gloria mundi.

I suspect this is the same troll that was picking on LVN last week with those comments about her checking his spelling, grammer, etc. in a couple of posts. I thought it was weird at the time, and now seeing this makes me think he's just an idot bully troll. Oh well, I guess when they fear the end is nearing (as I dearly hope it is) they get unpleasant.
