Basketball Eclipse Coming....
Permalink Closed

The USM Eagles have fallen fast, to #234 on the Sagarin Ratings.  The Lady Eagles, on the other hand, are getting their groove on and starting to win some games.  They have risen steadily, to #238.

Thus, if you go to Nitchampburg in a few days and look up in the sky, you will see a basketball eclipse --- when one team's ranking catches up and surpasses the other.  What's about to happen is simple.  Joye Lee-McNelis is about to take the mantle from Larry Eustachy.  Our prediction: with some of the good young talent she recruited last year, she won't give that mantle back as long as she's here.  As far as basketball goes, USM is about to be more like Tennessee (i.e., women's hoops bigger) than Kentucky (men's hoops bigger).  Get ready.

Or like LSU (their women's basketball is now #1 nationally).

I bet the Eagle Talkers will really love that one...I'd guess that less than 5% of their total posts are about women's sports. It will really get them that women's bb will be better than men's. Just give Larry some time, and he'll have the program turned around...and running straight into the gutter, while McNelis will probably have a shot at the WNIT next year if she has another decent recruiting class.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate & accurate if you used exampled from Division I-AA, Division II or maybe NAIA?

I'm all for women's hoops. The men get too much attention as it is. ESPN has been showing plenty of NCAA women's B-Ball, and its great. For those of us who miss the older, slower zone defense and get bored with today's run and gun, women college hoops rules.

We were listening to an ACC basketball game not long ago. I did not realize until well into the game that it was their women's team and not their men's team playing. That's how exciting women's basketball has become.

Man, you have been whipped. I have a women's BB game on video that I keep around to watch when I get insomnia...that is like watching sloths play the "slow motion" game.

I used to feel the same way as you, but then I stopped walking on my knuckles and began walking up-right. :)

Wow, that's pretty uncalled for. Not too many people can actually stand to watch women's BB, which is why the WNBA is floundering. I'm not saying bet rid of it, just don't put it on TV ahead of women's bowling.

Look, there is a wonderful board for USM sports discussions. Why don't you take it there?

(Just my but this thread reeks of being "bait" -- the typical "rabid" USM sports fan figures that the "liberal professors" & their lackies would support women's sports purely to be "politically correct" & by slamming women's sports they can divert the attention around here to something that, in the big picture of higher education, is utterly trivial.)

Caliban--this is an open message board. All of Cox-Purvis' posts are sports-related, and I can assure you that there is not "baiting" going on there. Others reply as they choose, and that is their option. You may choose not to read future sports-related posts, which would be your option. I'm really not too sure the EagleTalkers have enough guts to come over here, even for a hit-and-run, since they can be IP logged and banned for causing trouble.
