The headline for this reprinting of the story is even more alarming than the original headline. I hope it catches the eyes of readers on the coast. Now, if only the CL would also run the story . . .
Could the republication of this article by the Sun Herald be a sign? Do they know something we don't know? (I can hope, can't I?)

The fact that the byline reads "for the Associated Press" suggests this could be an AP wire story picked up by newspapers beyond Mississippi. Even in Atlanta, GA, the home of SACS.
That this has been picked up by the Associated Press is a very good thing.
I couldn't help being struck by one of the Thames quotes in this article:
"Theoretical/basic research is the genesis of applied research and thus is indispensable to our economic and academic well being."
He just can't seem to leave out the "economic" justification for research, can he? It's as though he's thinking (if he's thinking at all), "Arts and letters, where's the money generated by YOUR research?"
We all know what is indispensable to our well-being: the removal of Thames.

Your observation is an interesting and important one. I also noticed the same thing but did not mention it.
