After pondering the question, I can identify no professional or academic reason why anyone would stay. That pertains to senior as well as junior faculty members. Family reasons, perhaps, but not professional or academic reasons.
Dr. O'Neil is leaving for a good many reasons, NONE of which have to do with denial of tenure because IT DID NOT happen. This is unfair to say and should be retracted!

The only exercise some people get is from jumping to conclusions.
Okay, I'll grant that you can be wrong without "lying." There are such things as good faith mistakes. But not hanging around until one gets tenure, and being denied tenure are two totally different things. So far, you've said he was denied tenure, then come back and said he was close to tenure. Do you understand the difference?

I am dead serious when I say that I wish that I had been denied tenure after I came to USM. That would have been the biggest favor USM could have done for me. Unfortunately, I was awarded tenure and stayed. I am one of those that published, was awarded tenure, and perished in the USM quagmire.

Don't worry, enraged. No one around here takes "Concerned Student" seriously with his/her wantonly large font and ridiculously trollish statements. Anyone who knows Brian O'Neil knows the truth of his situation (and what a good person/teacher he is).

excuse me but I think I have a good program with good faculty and students. It is a struggle but I don't see a reason to give up on my program by a long shot. Our program has a good reputation which, while we are oin some period of stasis I think has a good future and our faculty are active and engaged acedemically and professionally. While I agree with you about some situtations, please don't abstract it to every single situation -- I think I have a good reason to stay and fight.

No doubt you do have a good program with good faculty and students, Stephen. We all know that. But don't we all have a good program with good faculty and students. Well, most of us do anyway.
It is a struggle but I don't see a reason to give up on my program by a long shot .
I don't think anybody suggested that you or anyone else give up on their programs. Everyone should fight for their program as long as they remain here.
I think I have a good reason to stay and fight.
Many good faculty members - marvelous faculty members - stayed and fought. And well they should have fought as long as they were here. But if the current academically hostile atmosphere at USM continues for very much longer, you too will become weary - as did I and others.

Mr. Wonderful, once again I think that Jameela has said something that deserves consideration for whatever that French phrase for "Quote of the Week" is.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Albert/Concerned Student/TheMan. All (or at least most) of what the the faculty has done to bring down the tyrranical regime of SFT is for the love of teaching, learning, and the advancement of knowledge in many varied fields. USM - its employees and students - will eventually be a better place for all because of people like Jameela, Stephen Judd, Frank Glamser, Gary Stringer, and many others.
Now go back to Eagle Talk and whine about your average football and bad basketball teams....
