What are these “activeboard.com” cookies that are being put on my computer every time I use this board? I delete them immediately, but I would like to know what information you are keeping about me?

Dear Albert:
Drs. Thames and Malone have requested that I compile personal and demographic data on those individuals who post messages on the AAUP board. These data will be used in various ongoing USM economic development research projects. There is nothing to be concerned about. You have my word.
Very truly yours,
Joseph Goebbels, Ph.D.
USM Minister of Truth and Professor of Economic Development
Does Albert ever wonder how, once he has seen a post and clicks back to the main page, activeboard changes the green checkmark to a black & white checkmark?? How does activeboard know what posts you have looked at? Cookies anyone? Albert, just clear them when you close down at the end of the day. No one is paying any attention to what you do. Activeboard has a gazillion other message boards than this one.
Every time I sign on to the AAUP-USM Message Board, I get a pop up from Internet Explorer. It is the only online site that where this happens to me on my computer. I've often wondered what the deal is and I don't care if you do track me or not. Just wondering.
Chicken Soup Lady is entirely correct on both counts. Activeboard actually sets one cookie (in my Mozilla browser) & it "tracks" the user enough to permit the system to show the checkmarks, keep a count on the number of "unique" users who are on the site at any time (displayed at the bottom of the main board page), etc.
If cookies bother you & you're willing to sacrifice some conveniences & "cool" features, then do like CSL says & get Firefox. It has pop-up blocking, ad blocking & better cookie management than Internet Exploder. I might also add that when there are security issues, the Mozilla development team usually has a new Firefox/Mozilla version available much faster than Microsoft can roll out an IE patch. Plus, upgrading Firefox/Mozilla doesn't involve "patching" your Windows installation (assuming you use Windows).
Now, to the real point(lessness) of this thread: Albert, the whole "let's try scaring everybody off this board" gambit was tried back last summer by a trollish poster. It didn't work then & it isn't going to work now. We all know that Activeboard logs IP addresses -- every web server on the planet does that unless you relay through cypherpunk systems. So get over it!

I want to make it clear that by "sacrificing some conveniences & 'cool' features" I do not mean that Firefox is less convenient or less feature-filled than IE. I mean that if you don't use cookies, not all the features on this board will work. Firefox is much more convenient & has a much richer feature set than IE.
Whew! This should keep the "Mozilla evangelists" from coming after my butt on a Friday afternoon.

The cookies are used by the AAUP-USM to collect personal info about you. The webmaster also maintains a database of your IP and every message you post from your IP. Once they identify you, they forward your name to the main AAUP and USM faculty senate. Then when you apply for tenure or some other job at another school, your track record will follow you. This is because the AAUP has a large underground network of university administrators that tap into the main database before they hire or promote anyone.
In fact, this is why O’Neil in the History Dept. was recently denied tenure and why Cabana was run out of the CJ Dept.

No wonder Amy Young is worried about money for envelopes! My gosh, the cost of maintaining this secret network must be enormous!!
Does anyone know first aid for aching ribs?? Mine are in bad shape from laughing at this trash.

This is a lie. Professor Brian ONeill was not denied tenure. He had, in fact, not yet come up for tenure. If he had not left USM, he would have certainly been promoted and tenured when he was scheduled to be reviewed, next year.

There are alot of lies everywhere on this board. You cannot take anything seriously here. This board is nothing more than a source of entertainment for bored people. Everybody knows this.

Everybody knows to remain skeptical about everything they read everywhere. Except on eagletalk, of course.
Who knows why Brian O'Neill left? Why Don Cabana left, or why he returned? Who knows why Shelby Thames keeps firing the very people he hired? Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
But Albert, some things turns out to be true. Here's a little trivia for you. Where was the now infamous memo from Jack Hanbury first exposed? What about the Black Friday letter from Grimes to Doty?
More important, where was the word "idot" first used?

As the Web Master, I find this post highly amusing.

Hmmm... Students must still be doing as much high octane acid now as they were in the 1960s... CS (which is an appropriate acronym), you are either insane or very, very stoned.

I've heard that SFT created the polymer science department back in 1970 because he was kicked out of the chemistry department. Invictus should be able to confirm if this indeed is true.

While I am aware that banquished is a word, I couldn't resist the allusion to the Gnome's penchant for buffets, etc. (see also: Faculty Orientation, Fall 2004, and Barnhills)

O'neil was here for 3.5 years. His tenure was right around the corner. Why do you think a professor would leave so close to his tenure? This is not a lie.

Assistant professors are generally most able to move to new jobs, and excellent young professors such as Brian O'Neil are particularly marketable. It's no secret that we've been hemorrhaging younger faculty. The work situation at USM is toxic--why wouldn't younger faculty go where they are supported in their career.
I thought your're earlier post about the AAUP/Fac Senate conspiracy was amusing.
However -- your latest regarding Professor O'niell is abominable. Do not post rumors like this about a faculty member please -- it is a nice way to sabotage someone's career . . .
Just because you can say it doesn't mean you should . . .
Here is a suggestion for Concerned Student, or anyone else for that matter. If you want to identify particular individuals and post unsubstantiated rumours, post either verifiable information, or at least have the cojones to reveal your own identity, otherwise you are without credibility.

CS, First I'll give you a generic reason why he left: because he could leave. That's why I left. That's why over 200 have already left; and that's why many more will leave in the near future if the IHL doesn't come to its senses real soon. It's as simple as that. Just why the h*ll would anyone want to stay? Would they want to stay because the USM faculty salaries are higher than the Southeastern average? Or maybe it's because USM has a world class reputation among its national peers. Or maybe it's that USM is one of the few universities in the nation that fully support the principles of academic freedom and shared governance. Or maybe they like the excitement associated with the possibility of having their emails tapped and their computers confiscated. Or perhaps it is the prospect of being accused publicly of criminal behavior. Judging from your posts, CS, I'd say that you probably think that anybody who stays at USM does so because they'd love having you in class. Dream on, CS, dream on.
