"USM may change direction of College of Business"

The administration of the University of Southern Mississippi has instructed the College of Business to move the department in a different direction, a direction that the Dean believes will adversely affect the University accreditation and damage the professional reputation of the College of Business.

Directions to Dr. Harold Doty, Dean of the College of Business, came this week from Dr. Jay Grimes, University Provost.  Dr. Doty, who came to USM two years ago from Syracuse University, has informed the Business College faculty of the ultimatum from Grimes.

Neither Doty nor Grimes was available for comment.

In his instruction to the Dean, Grimes has ordered a change from a focus on "theoretical and basic research" to applied research "that is of interest to our local and regional customers."

Sources close to the University said the instruction, in effect, changes the focus of the University's College of Business from an academic focus to a focus on public service, as basic economic development.

The change, one source said, "would be akin to restructuring an academic business school to a trade school."

Moreover, such a change is impossible under the policies of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the University's accrediting agency.

SACS rules, said one source, prohibit such a significant change while an institution is on probation.  SACS placed the University on probation in December, with the probation to continue until December of 2005.

Doty reportedly advised Grimes that the College of Business faculty was not advised of the program change prior to a public announcement by the University that the change was to be made.  Doty has also said that the region's business community has responded negatively to the change which has been ordered.

Doty has also contended, according to sources, that the change he has been ordered to make is "antiintellectualism."

And he added that the proposed change threatens academic freedom on the USM campus.

One source said the change being ordered by the Provost may be designed to bring the University's College of Business more in line with the mission and work of the Area Development Partnership, led now by Dr. Angie Dvorak who left the University under pressure to take the ADP presidency.

One thing I like about TI is their use of anonymous sources.  Wish the HA would do the same.

Robert, what did you think about this article above from the Independent?

WB,

I actually think it's a pretty good article.

It's not terribly original, and it could have been longer, but if the quotes from the unnamed sources are authentic, it does add a couple of highly plausible points to what's been said in the Hat Am.

readingisfun, you make an important point. The American's policy (requiring that the names of their sources be published) can work to the disadvantage of the newspaper and their readers. If the Washington Post had used the American's policy during the Nixon administration, the Post could not have exposed Watergate. The American can not conduct the same depth of investigative journalism, and report it to the pubic, as the Post did with the Deep Throat affair. Some newspapers require that the sources and information obtained be confirmed, but do not require that the actual name of the source be printed. I'm with you, readingisfun: I wish the HA would adopt same anonymity policy similar to the one that the Independent evidently uses. The American's current policy is crippling.

i've said this before--i don't trust the independent's reporting. i've said that this message board may be its sources for stories. since most posters are anonymous (including me), maybe all it's reporting is what people say on here. case in point--i said several days ago that maybe there was a linkage between applied research idea in the CoB and the ADP. where'd the idea come from? who heads up the ADP--Angie Dvorak. maybe the independent is quoting me as the anonymous source!

scm, that's what I suspected gurunburg was doing. You had to watch the sequence of postings pretty carefully, but pretty often stuff would get posted and then show up as one of his morsels.

I can see next week's Independent now, "according to stinky cheese man, there is a suspected linkage between the applied research idea in the CoB and the ADP." Stinky, are you lobbying to become the next university spokesmodel?

But I have been operating under the assumption that we want the media to read this message board - and the IHL members, and the Governor, and whoever else might be in a position to help us. The message could be a good source for stories.

Here's a question: you're a reporter. You have to choose between information given you by the Dome or information on this board. What do you choose?

Frankly, I'm not sure it's journalistically ethical to use the board as a source, but it's probably better information!

The board can provide some very good leads. If I were a reporter, and were assigned to this particular story, I'd stay glued to the board.

Since when have journalists been ethical?

I think the board might clue a smart reporter to things that might be asked after or issues that might otherwise be ignored.

For the rest of my life, when I see "unnamed source" I'll probably think its SCM.

Yeah, especially if the reporter says the source snarled and then argued with him till it was blue in the face .. . .

LVN - Yes, I remember that well.  In fact, observing the same pattern led me to question on the board whether he might be a sophisticated troll (still don't know if that was on or off target, but good to see someone else noticed the pattern too).

No Quarter!

I too suspected that might be the case - very much like a fotuneteller who makes one prediction after another (e.g., "You are going to meet a tall, dark handsome stranger.") Most of the fortuneteller's predictions will not materialize, but if just one of those predictions does turn out to be correct (at one or more will undoubtedly materialize), the credibility of the fortuneteller is enhanced in the eyes of the customer.

But that very sophisticated troll was being used by and was buying into a smear campaign that I believe he/she has finally come to understand...

Fellow Boardites,

Bob Pittman, owner of the Independent is a great person who is on our side.  Unfortunately, he does not have access to as much information as Kevin does, nor does he have the contacts at USM that he needs.  He has had to rely on LM for press releases and interviews and she will no longer take his calls or distribute press releases to him.  We need to help him get accurate information and he will publish it.  Along with the rest of the press, he can no longer trust information from the Dome, however, because he lives in Jackson, he has not been able to develop contacts around the USM tragedy.  He does not get his stories off this board because he does not know how to access it.  His office is out on highway 98, somewhere close to Lake Serene.  Go by and meet him or give him a call.  He is one of the best friends we have and it really hurts to read negative things about Mr. Pittman.

The regular use of anonymous sources is simply crappy journalism, plain and simple.  The information in those quotes could have been supplied from named sources if the journalist had spent more time on the story--it was nothing explosive or shocking.

Kevin Walters' stories have provided the same information as that story, except the last paragraph about the connection to the ADP, and I for one will always trust the HA far more than the Independent, a newspaper that overuses anonymous sources.  A good journalist uses anonymous sources sparingly as it increases the validity of the information and the credibility of the journalist.

The Washington Post also is a very respected news source that earned that respect from a history of good reporting, something The Independent hasn't done.

And the Hattiesburg American does have a policy about using anonymous sources.  A non-USM story from this past summer used an anonymous source, if any of you recall.  I'm sure, if necessary, the HA will use that policy again.

Andy, was the Washington Post's use of anonymous sources crappy journalism? The big league journalists who award the prizes did not think so. There was nothing crappy about that, plain and simple.

Referring, of course, to Watergate.

Amos,

If you refer to my subsequent paragraph you will see where I noted The Washington Post is a well-respected newspaper which has earned that respect from publishing credible, named sources and by doing such has earned the right to publish anonymous sources.  Perhaps I wasn't clear enough.  Anonymous sources have their place and should be respected and used only when there is no other way to get the information out.  However, I would not compare The Independent's overuse of anonymous sources to The Washington Post's during Watergate.

So why should the Independent be prohibited from using an anonymous source?
