Thanks for this link! Money quote from Shelboo on his view of what faculty should be doing:

"The idea here is to transform this technology into an article of commerce," said Thames. "Typically, what happens at an academic institution is you have ideas and you write research papers and you publish them in journals and that's where it stops. What we've tried to do is to carry it farther and, to use an old cliche, transfer the technology into the private sector."

The bit at the end, about how the Feds can tighten environmental regulations now--and make everyone use Shelby's brand of paint--is also in character.

Thanks to "Paint by Numbers" for the reminder about the "environmentally-friendly" paint at the Pentagon.  Funny that nothing else has come from this since then.

When I Googled "Green Paint and Pentagon" I got a link to Shelboo's company page -- his biography there http://www.polymercoating.com/thames.html was also interesting reading.

Wasn't there a thread about the EPA and Moss Point and Morton recently?  I'm running late, someone find it and kick it up please.

I didn't know university employees were allowed to have a company that could contract with university. And to think that I spent my time at USM doing research directed toward the greater good  Dang, I could have become a millionaire.

Yep. The legislation is called the Mississippi Universities Research Act (MURA) & Shelby Thames was a big mover in getting it passed.

Exactly, Invictus.

Somehow, I think this late Fall 2004 news is worthy of a closer look.

Just to note:  This is a different "Phoenix" posting.  I am still around, just haven't used this name lately. But I love the mythological meaning, which was my intent when I chose the new name for the AAUP message board.  The AAUP message board rose from the Fire Shelby board so we could all begin the mission anew. I look forward to the time we can all meet and celebrate.

Hey, Dr. MMR, Have you offered your services to the COB to help them "figure" out a solution to their new difficulties?  I would imagine that someone with your potent numerology skills could solve these problems mathematically....and so perfectly less messy!

“The Pentagon plans to use about 20,000 gallons of this paint to cover the interior of one wing of the building. If that application is successful, the paint will be used for the rest of the building in a segment of ongoing renovation program at the Pentagon, eventually covering the interior of all five wings.”

Contract for 20,000 gallons of “paint” paid for by the “grant?"

Awarded through a competitive bid process?

For profit (to whom?) or not for profit as a public service while advancing the cause of better living through science?

Did the other Pentagon wings use USM's Soylant Green paint? Was the paint a success? I never heard another word about it after SFT gloated over the first wing being painted???

I would imagine that if Soylant Green was warmly received after the first wing was painted, we'be be hearing about it in USM press releases.

Has "Soylent Green" ever been sold in appreciable quantities to a customer that wasn't somehow tied to federal funding? IIRC, there was the Pentagon contract & some contract for anti-fouling paint at Northrup-Grummand. Any true private sector sales?

Is the Green Seal paint made from soy or soylant?
