A little off topic but....

Does anyone know about Mississippi State strange rule for counting students that have withdrawn before official enrollment, but still get counted because of having their withdrawn course graded as W

I don't remember all that much from my days in Institutional Research (somewhere else) but I do recall that official enrollment is taken on the same day everywhere (Tenth Day) so if those students are not enrolled on the tenth day, they're not counted regardless.
Somebody with more recent knowledge, help me out here . . .

The reason I asked is because a friend of mine planned on going to State but because problems had to cancel. When he called (thinking he had to do it by today) was told he could wait until Monday and would just get a 'W' for the courses he is taking. They told him that although that he would still be technically enrolled it wouldn't count against he grades if he returned in the spring. So it seems that State is leaving him enrolled even though he is withdrawing. Also doesn't schools get part of their state funding based on class hours, which means State would also get funded as if my friend was still enrolled.
I just though the whole thing seemed slimy.

The only thing that matters is enrollment on the tenth day. That's the number that's used for state funding, etc.
I wonder if there was another reason for telling him to wait until Monday?

According to what I read in the new last april Ole Miss got more money because of a "New formula" and USM got less.

I've heard talk around campus faculty that IHL is pushing student credit hours and revamped how it was to be calculated. I guess MS must be trying to stack the deck.

For the third and final time, insideihlgmail. The tenth day of the semester, on every campus in the state system, "official" enrollment figures are reported. The official number is whoever was enrolled that day. If your friend dropped today, or if he dropped on Monday, it would not affect State's official enrollment figures.
If you want to believe that State is playing fast and loose with their numbers, go ahead, but it sounds more to me like you're just flinging out accusations based on partial and incorrect information.
I have no idea what you mean by "IHL is pushing student credit hours and revamped how it was to be calculated"

Hmmmm. . . Now let me see . . . I seem to recall that is why the College Board got rid of Fleming.  Because he fought the formula.  We did not get our backs up then, and I doubt we will now.  Our new president does not have the disposition to resist official policy and the continuing official prejudice.  Now, we just go with the flow.  Yassah, Massa!  Nosirrr, Massa!

Before we cast stones, we should remember the phantom 700+ graduate students put in a never to be taught course without their knowledge, counted on the tenth day, and then dropped without their knowledge. Until the local AAUP chapter blew the whistle, USM was #1 in enrollment that fall in 2003.

I could be mistaken, but I think the tenth day policy is federal, not state.
