What will NCAA Cursory Investigation turn up?
Permalink Closed

Many of you may not know it, but one of the biggest stories in college sports today is the trial in Memphis regarding payment for the services of DT Albert Means.  What was revealed 2 days ago is that Rip Scherer, then head coach at Memphis, offered to have Means' high school coach's wife's law school tuition covered by the university, a clear violation of rules.  Our sources indicate that this revelation has prompted a cursory investigation of USM, given that Scherer was OC here the past 2 years.

The C-P R doesn't believe anything will turn up regarding the football team.  Bower is as clean as they come, and the Eagles didn't sign anyone "suspicious looking" the past 2 seasons, and things have been running like they always have.  It is most likely that Scherer's actions vis-a-vis Means were those of a desperate man trying to salvage a job and a losing program.

The NCAA's visit is not without its dangers, however.  There have been persistent rumors that Larry Eustachy's MO is not as clean as Bower's.  Within (virtually) minutes after taking USM's head coaching position, LE had a former McDonald's High School All-American (with a sketchy past) on his roster.  This is not the norm for USM (having any kind of MC all american, for that matter).  There are a handful of dismissed players hanging around campus/town, and an assistant coach that mysteriously disappeared, leaving only a "Dear John" letter behind for LE to find.  If the NCAA's visit has a dual purpose, this might not turn up rosy for Giannini's AD.

Any time the NCAA comes to a campus, it's not a good thing. They can look at whatever (scope is not limited to a single sport), and can eventually hand down penalties with nowhere near the proof that would be required in a court of law. In other words, once accused, you're guilty until proven innocent. If you've followed this Memphis trial at all, you'll find out that the NCAA penalized Alabama (during NCAA investigations) using witnesses whose character is so poor that the Feds wouldn't put them on the stand in the current federal trial. This is not good for USM -- the appearance of impropriety coupled with perceived "rogue" coaching staff members in football and basketball might lead to a complete investigation of the athletic department, including ALL sports, the AD, and any related boosters (Eagle Club, Hardwood Club, etc., as well as individual activities). Hope all those cars in the student athlete parking lot are legit.

Did the NCAA really come to Southern Miss? If they came, are you sure they weren't here investigating the allegations brought against James Green and his staff?

Trust me, the coach left this university for reasons that had nothing to do with wrongdoing.

Nobody has said the NCAA has been to campus, only that a cursory (initial) investigation has been initiated based on RS's employment here. If RS is implicated by the NCAA in any way with respect to the Memphis trial, everywhere he's worked since then will be scrutinized, and he may be hit with a "show cause" citation, which means that any institution that wishes to employ him will have to show cause why he is the person they need to hire...not as simple as it sounds. Kind of like a black mark against you that never goes away.

Again, nobody's ever said that the NCAA has been here, only that we should expect a visit and that, based on the visit, bad things may happen.

The NCAA dealt with a couple of minor violations under Green while he was coach. If there had been a major violation, I am quite sure the NCAA would have found it then and punished the program accordingly. It is noteworthy, as well, that when one area (i.e., football) gets NCAA sanctions, all others (i.e., basketball) are "under the gun" as well for the duration of the initial probation. If something did go wrong in football (and I'm not saying it did), then ANY slip-up by basketball (and I'm not saying there have been any) would be deadly.

What ever happened to that guy who was p.o.ed that his son was kicked off the basketball team by James Green and went around claiming that Green had been violating NCAA rules while he was head coach at USM?

As for the former McDonald's All-American that is on the USM basketball team now, you really need to look deeper into his past to know that we got him for pretty much the same reason that we got Eustachy.
