RECRUITING, CUSTOMER SERVICE GIVE
SOUTHERN MISS ENROLLMENT BOOST
HATTIESBURG - A vigorous recruiting effort and an emphasis on customer service have resulted in increased enrollment this spring at The University of Southern Mississippi.
Unduplicated enrollment at Southern Miss grew by 92 students, climbing from 14,099 students last spring to 14,191 students in spring 2005.
Unlike duplicated enrollment totals, which count students multiple times if they are enrolled at multiple locations, unduplicated totals count students only once for their enrollment at a specific location.
With 418 new students, the Gulf Park campus saw the greatest overall increase, growing from 1,733 students this time last year to 2,151 students this spring. The Hattiesburg campus netted 62 new students, increasing from 12,374 last spring to 12,436 this spring.
Southern Miss President Shelby Thames said the increased enrollment illustrates the public's confidence that despite the university's temporary SACS probation, "people have faith in our academic programs and delivery of education."
"Students see we are taking care of business, and they are satisfied knowing we will have been removed from probationary status in December," Thames said.
Dr. Joe Paul, vice president for student affairs, said he was "pleased but not surprised" with continued student growth at Southern Miss.
"The increased enrollment this spring is a reflection of the quality of our faculty and academic programs as well as our unique ability at Southern Miss to focus on the needs of the individual student," Paul said.
Dr. Ken Malone, chief operating officer of the Gulf Park campus, attributes the growth to the efforts of many people at Southern Miss.
"We've increased academic offerings, made it easier for working adults to attend classes, eliminated administrative barriers outside of the classroom and increased classroom space. In short, we've all worked together to give the student more," Malone said.
Malone added that support from outside of Southern Miss has also helped enrollment grow. "Coast businesses have encouraged and enabled more of their employees to attend Southern Miss. Private and corporate donations to scholarships and programs are way up, and state funds for a new teaching laboratory will allow more students to attend in the years to come," he said.
Dr. Jay Grimes, provost of the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses, said he was "ecstatic to see the numbers," especially the robust growth on the Gulf Coast.
"Clearly, Southern Miss is offering a product that the students want," Grimes said.
Dayonne McGuire, director of continuing education, said the increased enrollment is due to many factors, including increased academic offerings.
"We are also doing a better job at communicating to the community the quality programs, flexible formats, and continuous registration," McGuire said.
Joe Paul's quote was the best one, IMO. Sounds like a quote from somebody who is a professional university administrator. Of everyone currently in the "upper" administration at USM, he is probably the MVP. He darn sure is the most experienced.

There appears to be Mader math going on here. I missed the algebra class that showed 92 = 418+62
"Customer Service"... Please, can we stop referring to students as "customers" -- they are not in any metaphorical or literal sense. We are here to serve the students, to be sure. But, they are not "customers" in a classic marketing sense. For goodness sake, we are a university!
A increase of 92 students and they bring out five spokespersons for the university to comment on the matter in a press release. Isn't that like using a cannon to shoot a fly? I can't imagine a university making such a big deal about this.

Unless they were afraid the numbers would go DOWN....

Amen. And please stop referring to a college education at USM as a "product." Makes me feel academically dirty.
Were these figures generated during the period when enrollment caps were lifted on class? Was the purpose of lifting those caps that of serving our "customers" with our "product," or was it's purpose that of helping to ensure an apparent enrollment increase?
What day is used for the count? Is it tenth day? Is that before or after the withdraw date? Also, what is normal for NA's?? I had two and only one dropped.

stinky cheese man, you say the press release uses 10th day data. When did the add-drop period end?
"Unduplicated enrollment at Southern Miss grew by 92 students, climbing from 14,099 students last spring to 14,191 students in spring 2005" -- a whopping .65252% increase! Stop the presses!

Stinky, if end-of-term data is used for budgeting, then maybe the 10th day data count is primarily for public relations purposes (e.g., the press release).
10th day data is used by state boards in other states for "official" purposes, not for PR. Is this something that came from US Dept of Ed? I haven't dealt with this stuff in a long time and don't remember all I know.

To paraphrase the late Senator Dirksen, a half a percent here and a half a percent there and pretty soon you're talking real numbers.
Oh, but you are missing the real point of the exercise! If each of the 92 new faces invents just one totally useless product, patents it, needs a big tax writeoff, calls it a $100 million thingy-ma-bob and donates it to the university, then in no time flat the USM Endowment will exceed Harvard's! Now THAT'S Economic Development the Thames way!
"Students see we are taking care of business, and they are satisfied knowing we will have been removed from probationary status in December," Thames said.
This quote from SFT is the best part. Someone needs to see to it that SACS gets a look at it.

Unbelievable. I missed that in the original press release, and I was even wearing my bi-focals!
"We've increased academic offerings, made it easier for working adults to attend classes, eliminated administrative barriers outside of the classroom and increased classroom space. In short, we've all worked together to give the student more," Malone said.
Interesting...wasn't he the one who moved the administrative barriers to "inside the classroom." I guess that's how you eliminate them "outside of the classroom."

This is stretching the rules of English grammar to their absolute breaking point....off with his head!
(Should read: "...and they should be satisfied knowing that we will be removed from probationary status in December." Even then, it's a fairly bold statement...SACS should pick up on it).
You know, I may just be a country boy from South Mississippi, but I expected to read that there were several hundred more students on campus this year. On the other hand, don't they usually put out the enrollment in the fall semester? Why did they have to wait until the spring? Was it because the "extra 92" students didn't make it here in time for the fall? that sure would have looked bad, us either losing or not gaining ground. I would like to know how these increases compare to State's enrollment.

As I mentioned upthread, it was the Student Services VP who credited faculty & academics. (Student services is an area that legitimately could be using the "customer service" metaphor.) Meanwhile, the academic administrators were talking "customer" & "product." That's why I thought Joe Paul's quote was the best.

Yes. It was the best. And he is the most experienced. But never forget that Joe Paul was in at the meeting and joined in the general attack on Myron when he was faculty senate president. And I've been told that he was in the room, smiling and shaking hands when the deans were fired and was at the announcement meeting the night before. He is part of the team.
What would you folks think of an official University of Southern Mississippi recruiting document from January 2005 that claims student enrollment of 16,500?

"Dr. Joe Paul, vice president for student affairs, said he was 'pleased but not surprised' with continued student growth at Southern Miss."
I don't see that this statement particularly stands out. Lots of experience is fine, unless it is the same old experience time and time again.
