Just so nobody else has to read through all the ET exchanges: Mercer is NOT "getting football." A Mercer ALUM is coaching a small college team whose mascot is some kind of hawk. Their logo, not Mercer's, may or may not resemble the USM (or Iowa) logo. Someone may or may not give a rip.

My reading is that the coach who is establishing the new football program at Shorter College is a graduate of Mercer & USM. Shorter's mascot is the Hawk. Mercer's mascot is the Bear. It appeared to me that the new coach was proudly holding his old USM football helmet in the picture. You'v got go admire the guy about whom the article was written He's obviously proud of USM. You are right, ram. Lighten up, EagleTalk.

I read the article again, and also some of the EagleTalk threads. It's unclear to me whether the new Shorter coach had any prior connection with USM. But it really doesn't matter - the helmet in front of his picture is neat! Let EagleTalk debate the merits, not us.
Yeah, the article is a bit deceiving; however, what would have made this story even better is that Fleming is the current prez of Mercer, Martray is the current dean of education, and Susan Malone is I believe the assoc. dean!!! Oh well.

Prominence is in the eye of the beholder. I view it from an academic perspective. Athletics, I'll leave to the national polls. Here are the 7 that caught my attentionfrom an academic perspective:
American
Benedictine
Boston College
Carson-Newman
Concordia
Emory
Mary Washington
Perhaps some would place Georgia Southern above a couple of those, and I wouldn't argue about that. These are the schools whose mascot is the Eagle (with the "Golden")

R. Kirby Godsey is the president of Mercer. Fleming is the EVP and Provost. Malone is an Assoc Dean under Martray.

Did you mean without "golden" since I know BS and GS are just eagles. Marquette is a prominent academic school that uses goleden eagles.

Marquette should be added to this list.

Now they are thinking about suggesting USM change its helmet to mimic that of Shorter College's:
FROM EAGLETALK.NET:
Following with the "logo stealing" post below.....I was wondering if Reply anyne could photoshop the eagle head onto a black helmet to see what it would look like.....i hope that is not some kind of "logo violation" also??
