The BOGUS new program rapid response team is pleased to announce its new baccalaureate, master's & doctoral diplomas in Risk Management.
And so the Risk Managers have something to manage, BOGUS is also pleased to announce its new Master of Disaster degree.
every time people want the legislature to dig into USM, I'm reminded of things like on the thread. As a parellel situation, there is a bill in the Florida legislature to establish a chiropractor's school at FSU. The faculty are up in arms, etc., but some in the legislature want it. Florida is a state that has had an activist legislature when it came to the universities. Wouldn't want it a minute--lived under it for a while.
Jay Dean has been trying to get this school for years. He tried to get it to locate in the old Hattiesburg High building. Anyone know if Jay is involved in this?

The idea is to create a formal link between the USM's art and performance programs and the arts high school. There are far more good things for us in this than bad, we hope -- especially as the state is still obligated to foot the bill. Personally -- Jay was right on this one orginally. It makes sense to locate your arts high school close to the major university center for the arts. Since we didn't quite get that -- this is a good step. Especially since and Dance (although the school doesn;t have a dance program yet) has an Ed degree and Music has lots of presence in the secondary schools.
I don't know about Jay -- I've spoken up for it since I learned it might be a possibility. The truth is some of us hope that link might be a way tp help protect the school. I have spent a fair amount of time with the theatre area -- have seen their shows and they have visited us. It does not make me unhappy -- although I don;t yet see exactly how the relationship will work.
I don't think this one fits into the conspiracy theory folks . . . . (of course, I could always be suprise -- I frequently am.)
If Thames would make your involvement in it a priority, I'd buy into into it as well, because - you are right - it does make sense. But something tells me, a nagging doubt, that he wants to acquire it and then distance it from any people who would be excellent mentors/decision makers in this enterprise. It'd be great for the Arts and for those high school students. Sheboo-sheboo's decisions lack moral substance so it's hard to believe that he has anyone's interests at heart except some self-serving ones of his own. Remember, it's a high school which equates to curriculum and instruction which equates to need I say more?
The bill as written is very odd -- it seems to be a badly done grafting of the original bill esptablishing the school with some USM language added in . . . . it actually isn't very definitve about budgeting. My guess from discussion with Dean Pood are that we won;t take it unless the state will continue to fund it.
Seems odd that the governing (or advising board?) board would not include department chairs or reps from the faculty of the various programs . . . . at least on an ad hoc basis.
I'm dubious about whether this will happen in its present form.

You are right educator -- my doubts are noted in the post previous to yours. One hopes that perhaps sometimes even self-serving decisions can be the right ones. Time will tell . . .

Actually, I agree with Stephen. JEven though I've disagreed with him many times, Jay was right on this one. It could provide a big boost for the arts at USM and ultimately a big boost for art education in the state. Even now, still, after everything, we are have the best arts programs around.

Project to Join USM to Longleaf Trace My, we have grand plan's don't we? First the arts high school, and now a new access route to campus. This item says the Longleaf Trace project will make campus access easier. Do they expect parents to bring their prospective students to campus by trail bike?

The BOGUS trustees convened in emergency session this morning & after heated debate declared that it will be a cold day in hell before BOGUS will award an honorary degree, regardless of its title, to somebody as utterly unqualified as Shelby Thames.
