Eustachy "Gang Bang" t-shirts
Permalink Closed

Just saw on a sports chat room that transient vendors are selling a t-shirt (among the many they sell) in the Big 12 part of the US, including Iowa Cityon some college campuses about Eustachy .

The front says "We're riding a train...." and on the back at the top is a cartoon picture of a long train with caricatures of Pitino etc. hanging and waving their hands etc.  The side of the train says "The Eustachy Gang Bang," and underneath it says "Hop on Board and have some fun!"  The caboose has a picture of USM's logo eagle, and it says something about it being stolen.  From what was described, the screen printer is adding the scores of USM's C-USA games as they happen.

Apparently, LE is not liked that much in Big 12 land (or Iowa City).  One of the posters says the papers are now starting to penetrate C-USA campuses.

I do.  These sound like cool shirts, can give for gifts and have as a keepsake.

They do not sound cool. They sound like nauseating cr@p. I don't know about or care about Larry E., but I care about making rape sound funny or cool.

I'm with you, CSL.  As my grandmother would say, "There's no class like no class."

Tacky, tacky, tacky.

My girlfriend goes to school at Iowa State, and they're for real.  They hate Eustachy up there, because they think he ran their program into the ground.  My girlfriend's coming down for her Spring Break and she's bringing several t-shirts for me and my fraternity brothers.  I wish she could get down here sooner so that I could wear one during basketball season.

For those of you who don't like the idea, just don't buy one or wear one.  How's that for a solution?

I'm growing uncomfortable with the postings regarding Eustachy - as a long time season ticket holder, I'd like to see the bball program advance and I'm optimistic that LE might do that (as I was when James Green took over).

Some of the postings on this thread have been mean spirited and destructive; offer advice and constructive criticism if you want, but please refrain from remarks that insult, hurt or otherwise demean an individual.

Well I think the shirt is funny. I even tend to be a bit a feminist also. Gang doesn't mean rape. Or It doesn't nowadays maybe I'm too young for this board.

It's making fun of LE and USM more than anything else.

The Eustachy thread was the first to be closed on the old board.  FireShelby closed it because it was getting too personal, too hateful, and too off-topic.

The shirt isn't making fun of anything personal about Eustachy.  It is laughing at the butt-whipping that his team is being handed night-in and night-out.  They lost by about 50 points the other night.

LE makes about $250,000/year, and part of what he gets paid for is to take the ribbing one gets from losing.

This is nothing compared to the ACC.  Get the latest issue of Sports Illustrated and read the story about J.J. Redick of Duke and how he's treated by fans and vice versa.

Eustachy was at Iowa State in AMES, IOWA. Iowa City is the home of the University of Iowa.

That's why they're hot there -- it's the home of the in-state rival to ISU.

I live in Iowa City. Haven't seen one of the shirts yet. It's usually under 20 degrees, so people are wearing parkas not T-shirts. I'll let you know if I see one.

I called my girlfriend todayand asked her to send some shirts by FedEx. They should be here in a couple of days, and I'll be selling them AT COST right outside the new International building as soon as I get them. The cost should be around $12 each, which covers the cost of the shirt plus shipping. You professors should look for them in class, because they're supposed to be very colorful.

Be sure and let us know when they arrive and what time you will be outside selling them.

Thanks.

Hey Iota, what drives "Eagle Fan" nuts is that so many USM students come to school wearing Ole Miss and State stuff, and many drive off on weekends to Starkville and Oxford to watch their favorite teams play.  These people are hanging on to the "dream of Eustachy" with all their might, making a deal with you know who to have a winning program in men's basketball.

Step one in LE 12-step program: Get rid of Jasper Johnson.

Sounds like a man with a plan.  Where can I get some stock in this for my portfolio.

Everyone keeps saying to check back in 2 years on Eustachy.  Here's what everyone has to remember: Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette, DePaul, etc. etc. are all leaving C-USA for greener pasture.  They are being replaced by a much inferior lot in terms of basketball.

We have reported before that James Green won 34 games in his first 2 years at USM (17 wins/year).  He had 87 wins after 5 years (17.4 wins/year).  With the new C-USA schedule, LE should have to have quite a few more wins that these two numbers to even be considered in the same category as Green.  We'll see.

Why is this the case? Does anyone on this board have a good answer? Just wondering.

It's simple, really. USM athletics are equivalent to high school athletics unless you live in Hattiesburg or have parents who went to USM. EVERYONE else in the state follows either State or Ole Miss. It's kind of like being a Green Party member in our current political arena -- inconsequential.

As long as we are up late talking about the important stuff like basketball . . .

Am I the only one who sees any parallel between Larry E. here at USM and Jackie S.  at State?  Both were hired after having major success at larger, more visible programs. Each "stubbed his toe" and tarnished his image.  But State (then) and USM (now) decided to (a) give him another chance or (b) hire a "winning" coach at a discount (depending on your point of view).

I remember Jackie saying something when he was hired in Starkville to the effect of "I could win at Sisters of the Poor."  And maybe he could, but he couldn't win at State.  Of course, all of the Eagletalkers were quick to point out Jackie's character flaws early on. I don't often visit ET anymore, so I don't know what they say about Larry now.

Man, those B.O.G.U.S. dudes are so strict! The Man can't keep me down.

The Mule, I've got you down for a shirt! That's a great slogan: "Cover your ass with a Eustachy shirt!"

Actually, Sherill did win at State, including getting to the SEC championship game. State alums got what they paid for, but they also got what they should have seen coming. You sleep with dogs, you get fleas.

Actually, Sherrill had about as many losing seasons mixed in with the winning ones during his more than decade stay with State.  The SEC West team you refer to lost 5 games, including that game.  His best team lost 2 games --- his tenure there at State fairly well resembles, record-wise, that of Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

For the chance they took hiring JS, we would have demanded/wanted much more (trophies, etc.) than they got from him.

I think CPR is on point, here. While the LE and JS hires are similar, JS was fired for not producing on the field and for not stabilizing the program (NCAA issues and JUCO recruiting). What I think is not being said by many here (though mentioned by one or two) is that you can judge a coach by his past -- people can change, but they usually change for the worse. Take away all the hype leading to this hire and you can see the truth. LE won at ISU with another coach's recruits, then lost with those same recruits when coaching really mattered. Then, LE lost with his own recruits. I'd be willing to bet that, had LE gone 35-15 over his second two years at ISU, the university would have disciplined him but not fired him. He's not a great coach.

If you want to see a great coach, then you need to look for someone who accepts full responsibility when his team loses ("I just didn't prepare the team well enough."), gives total credit to his team when the team wins ("I'm so proud of these guys. They have really worked hard and done the things they had to do to earn this win."), conducts himself with an air of class (i.e., no thrown objects or constant spewing of profanity), and one who adapts his system of offense and defense to the talent available, whether he recruited it or not, to put them in a position to win games (recruiting good PEOPLE doesn't hurt here).

What have I seen from LE? Blaming players for "not getting it done," a resurgence of his old Iowa State "potty mouth" and off-the-floor problems, and pulling scholarships from players recruited by James Green, even if they are producing on the floor and off.

That's what people who really know basketball see when they see USM's head coach. The rest is just hype from the Mader Machine and Eagle Talk, most of whose members are so starved for some sort of athletic validation that USM is as good as Mississippi State and Ole Miss that they would do anything to get that validation.
