Eustachy lied?

Eustachy's post-game press conference was shown on WDAM last night.  LE said that Jasper Johnson's departure from the team was a decision that he and LE came to mutually.  However, the HA reported today that LE went up to JJ the other day and told him that his scholarship would no longer be there at the end of the season.

mutual decision = "clean out your locker and get your ass outa here..."

Now, Andy. You know that this type of stuff isn't what this board's about. Maybe if LE is rumored to be the next provost you'd get a reply from these folks.

How about this...I heard from a guy who lives next door to the girl whose cousin cuts LE's grass that JJ didn't buy into LE enough, so LE threatened to rip JJ's head off and shove it up JL-M's nose and then take away his scholarship...and give it to SFT for some mid-year raises!

Well, I think that JJ and LE both mutually agreed that JJ did not have to finish the year if he did not want. However, JJ and LE did not agree on renewing his scholly.

The interesting thing about Eustachy that no one talks about is that his Iowa State teams were 29-33 in his last two years there.  His successor, Wayne Morgan, won 20 games last year in his first year there, just 9 wins shy of what Eustachy won in the prior two years.

The idea that he is one of the best coaches in the land is a bit of a stretch.  He took a #2 seeded team to the Elite 8 a few years ago.  #2 seeded teams are supposed to go to the Elite 8 --- the final 8 teams in an NCAA tourney are supposed to be the four #1s and four #2s.  The next year, his #2 seeded team lost in the first round to a 15 seed (if our memory is correct), something that has almost never happened since 1985, when the tourney expanded to the 64 team format.

As has been pointed out, James Green won 34 games in his first 2 years at USM.  We're more than halfway through year 1 and LE has only 10 wins (including 2 against the NAIA).  He's got some work to do.

I think the think to remember here is that he's pulling scholarships from players who have been extremely productive in the past. That's a bad sign for anyone who follows college athletics. Typically, coaches honor scholarship committments made by previous coaches, even if it means having to have a walk-on or two on the team. One thing you don't want as a coach is a reputation of an "Indian Giver," as that doesn't inspire your more intelligent players to have confidence in your word as your bond.

By the way, wasn't Jasper Johnson Southern Miss' best player last year? Has he even played this year? I didn't know Larry Eustachy had that good of a recruiting year, or at least his record this year doesn't show it.

Also, Tim Floyd was the guy who recruited all of Eustachy's talent to Iowa State, and the talent level really dropped off after that. Not to mention LE's less-than-stellar graduation rate. Where's "NCAA Investigator" when you need him?
