It will take some time for Coach McNelis to get the program back in shape but she will get it done. We suffered greatly under the previous coach, thank goodness he is gone now.

Agreed. The previous coach left the cupboard bare. USM hasn't had a strong women's program (relative to resources) since Kay James. Coach McNelis is a proven coach with a strong record of success at Memphis State. No coach ever made or blocked a basket. It takes players.

Just because it happens under Shelby doesn't make it bad. By all accounts, this was a good hire -- coach with a fine record and a desire to come back to her alma mater to coach. If every hire made under the current regime is suspect then we might as well pack our bags now because we have just replaced 227 faculty members in the past two years.
Every once in a while I'm over in the Payne Center when the team is practicing -- sure looks to me like they work pretty darn hard.
Give her and her team a chance . . .
I hate to see this message board get pounded because people want to lay every problem (short or long term) on the Dome. It just ain't so. We'll do better to concentrate on the real issues.

Thank you for your comments. I read this message board fairly often. If people would just stick with the real issues instead of trying to blame every possible thing that happens at Southern Miss on Thames, this forum would have more credibility.
I think the problem that underlies this thread is that Lee-McNelis was quoted the other day as saying something about one of her players like "She'll rip your head off and shove it up your nose."
Besides the fact that this statement makes absolutely no sense, you have to wonder why she would say that to the media at all. Her team is now 6-12 overall and 1-5 in C-USA action. It seems pretty out of place for the coach to be saying anything except "we have to work harder," "we have to get better," etc., etc.
It's amazing how the posters on EagleTalk (and those who venture here to post) will defend these basketball hires but will call for Jeff Bower's resignation if he doesn't get to the Liberty Bowl.
What's even more astounding is that there are plenty of women's basketball teams out there in comparable conferences with less talent and better records. 40 turnovers in a game isn't a lack of talent -- it's a lack of coaching. It's amazing how blind some of you are when it comes to activities outside of your own area. A college basketball team having 40 turnovers in a game is like an intro to chemistry class not knowing what the periodic table is.
Let's get back to the "important issues" like whether or not to have a vote of "no confidence." The last one sure did a lot of good. 95% "no confidence" and Shelby's still president. That sort of tells you how important faculty input is to the IHL.
The simple fact is that 75%-90% of the state of Mississippi doesn't give a rat's butt about what anyone on this board thinks, because that 75%-90% doesn't care about education except as it relates to football: high school, JUCO, or college.

Who gets to decide what the real issues are? Credibility with with who? It isn't like anybody who means anything, knows anything, or does anything reads this board. The public? Puh-leez.
I should've posted on an earlier thread:
Reverend Johnson: Oh Lord. Do we have the strength to carry on this mighty task . . .? Or are we just jerking off? Townspeople: Amen. Reverend: Amen.
