clarification--i'm not on thin ground about doctoral education costing more. i'm unsure how it is being weighted in the proposed formula, except to say that doctoral degree granting programs ought to be getting more money.

Sorry to disagree, Info, but the False Profit is closer to the fact here: CE gets to keep approximately 71-73% of tuition collected for credit classes. Do it for a decade and you have enough to build the new International Building. There's a plaque in the new building recognizing the tuition contributions of these many students.

The "rest of the tuition" is a matter of debate. One explanation is that the balance of the tuition goes back to the general fund. Another is that there's no "balance" to speak of after one subtracts out unpaid fees and scholarship students taking CE hours as part of their regular load, in which case there are no real tuition dollars to support a payment of more than about 70% to CE. A former budget person once told me that the 71-73% represented the amount of real tuition money paid and that CE was getting it all.

What do we know about this situation for a fact?

Fact: CE made enough money over a relatively short period of time to build the new International Building.

Fact: There have been rumors swirling about Ken Malone taking over CE.

Why is it so hard to believe that Shelby wouldn't want to KM to run CE? It's a money maker, and if you expand its scope of operation (i.e., add more CE programs and all the in-class offerings as on-line offerings), it could become the money machine Thames wants to fund Polymer Science, ED, and Ed/Psyc.

What I'm saying is that there must be some reason SFT wants it, and, given his usual M.O., it's not too far of a stretch to guess that it's money; therefore, CE must be making money, and lots of it, which CE gets to keep. Otherwise, why not just let CE run, rake $$ into the general fund, and spend your time thinking of ways to make business and arts/letters faculty miserable?

Can you imagine a provost named Kenbot?  I mean, really!  No, Ken Malone is not even under consideration as Provost.  The bigger story is what is happening in the search for a provost.  Look for a candidate who will expand the network and be "on the team".  Why would Malone get further promoted when another Shelby "yes man" can expand the team.  The machine is forcing their candidate in.  Part of the entry price was a recent forcing out.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

When Shelby Thames called me, The Nature Boy, and asked me to be provost at USM, I told him there's not a man alive that can walk that aisle night after night the way I can. You see, The Nature Boy is just what USM needs: stylin' and profilin'. I drive fast cars, I wear designer clothes, and, WHOOOOOO!, I hang with beautiful women. What got me the job was when I told Shelby that "To be the man, you've got to beat the man." He jumped up like his butt was on fire. I got a little nervous, though, when Lisa Mader told me she wanted to ride, WHOOOOOO!, Space Mountain.
