NEWS RELEASE

Southern Miss and Biloxi Regional Medical Center Partner

LONG BEACH -- The University of Southern Mississippi and Biloxi Regional Medical Center have established a partnership to meeting the needs of BRMC employees.  In the partnership, Southern Miss is offering on-site, prerequisite courses for nursing employees desiring to complete their bachelor's degrees in nursing.

The program is designed in a flexible, eight-week format so employees can complete their core nursing courses in one year. On January 7, approximately 30 BRMC employees commenced the program by enrolling in two courses.

Southern Miss offers all aspects of registration, application, books and information sessions at BRMC for the students’ convenience.  The objective of both parties is to provide quality academic programs meeting the needs and schedules of the employees of BRMC.  Southern Miss is leading the way into a new flexible educational environment by bringing the classroom to students.

"This partnership is a perfect example of the type of unique delivery of education we can offer and are pleased to offer to professionals throughout Mississippi.  We are bringing advanced education to those people who want it in an environment that is convenient for them," said Dr. Shelby Thames, Southern Miss president.

As workforce needs of the business industry increase and more people want to advance their careers, many businesses are turning to a more convenient and flexible alternative for their employees to become educated.

"The ultimate goal of the partnership is to make a positive difference in nursing considering the effects the national nursing shortage has had on many medical facilities and also to allow Biloxi Regional employees easy access to begin or further their education," said Tim Mitchell, chief executive officer of BRMC.

Southern Miss has begun partnering with local businesses to increase local community member education and meet the needs of the Gulf Coast business community with quality education.  BRMC is the first partnership for Southern Miss.

In July, the BRMC's board of directors presented a $70,000 gift to Southern Miss' School of Nursing on the Gulf Park campus.  The funds have been used to hire for a nine-month nursing faculty position and provide necessary equipment for the school's nursing skills lab.

Noticeably absent appears to be a quote from the person responsible for the academic administration of the college of health...

Is the target of this BRMC program to be students who already have ADN degrees & have passed NCLEX-RN? If so, a modular 1-year advanced core would be cool & pretty innovative. It would have the potential to greatly increase the number of BSN personnel on the coast, increase a lot of nurses' pay, etc. Which would all be great.

Or is the program targetting another audience?

Can someone from nursing describe how the proposed program would operate?

There is no one in nursing from the Hattiesburg campus (at least faculty wise) who can comment on this.  We are operating completely separately and unequal.  In spite of our accreditation as "one school of nursing".  So that should surprise anyone?

Former IHL board member Ricki Garrett was just on the radio commenting on the critical shortage of nurses in the state of Mississippi.  I may not have her quote exactly but it was something like "The shortage is not due to a lack of interested students in the state but to a lack of nursing faculty at our state's colleges."  Her statement was followed up by a reference to the new BRMC relationship.

How did we get in this position of having a lack of nursing faculty?

i can't speak to the nursing faculty shortage in MS, but here a link to an interesting fact sheet on the nursing faculty shortage generally:

A shortage of nursing profs occurs when the salary/benefits offered to nursing profs falls below market clearing levels (i.e., the market salary/benefits).

ECONOMICS 101 (and is a concept convered for exam 1)

USM isn't the only entity in this old world with its priorities on the wrong feet. Of course, once you shoot off all your toes, it's pretty easy to make the boots fit either foot...

More evidence that the Coast campus will ultimately become an independent entity unto itself.

No #9, that's not what this is about.  This was a (not so) subtle reminder to the board that there are multiple ways for things to play out.  If the board had taken appropriate action yesterday, this one might have been handled quietly.  Now my guess is that this will be the next public embarassment.  I am so incredibly disgusted with the men and women empowered with the public trust.

"Ship of Fools,", that is precisely what this is all about. Note this statement from "shot in the dark" posted earlier on this thread:   We are operating completely separately and unequal.  In spite of our accreditation as "one school of nursing". Separatism is rampant. I can't say whether that is bad or good. I'm not qualified to judge that. What I'm saying is that, as was the case when LSU-NO became UNO and considering the way things are going at USM at the present time, there is a high likelihood that The Coast campus will evolve into Mississippi's 9th university.

#9, we're about to embark on an irrelevant argument here.  Even if the foundation of your statement is true, it is not at the heart of the next USM scandal.  The issues raised on this thread will come to light before there is further discussion or decision about a 9th university, and they should.

"Ship of Fools," you could very well be right. But just what is at the heart of the next USM scandal. I see nothing earlier in this thread that gives me a clue.
