I know several USM alums and business people here in Jackson who regularly spend time on USM's campus during the workweek and I've heard numerous similar anecdotes about things at USM. They tell me that the campus is physically as unattractive now as it has ever been (lots of ugly road work and bad landscape maintenance, etc.), the number of students actually seems lower than compared to years ago, and the overall atmosphere on campus there is sorta glum.
Are these anecdotes accurate, and can you guys provide a clearer picture of some of the changes at USM for those of us who haven't gotten back in a while and want to understand?
With the budget cuts, yes the campus has looked bad (for several years in fact). Many of the buildings are extremely dirty and poorly maintained. But of course, Roy Klumb says we have so much "fat" we don't even recognize it. I heard rumors last year that the physical plant was literally millions of dollars behind in maintenance--perhaps someone else can verify that.
Due to the tyrannical policies of Shelby Thames, there has been a large exodus of faculty and staff from USM, including many who had devoted their entire professional careers to the place or who had planned to stay there until retirement.
I can't imagine you haven't heard about the faculty firings last year, the protests, the no-confidence vote of the faculty in the president, etc. etc. etc.
The school is currently in a dangerous state, due to being on probabtion from its main accreditation agency SACs, due to the mismanagement of the Thames administration.
I suspect that the faculty of USM is more depressed than it has ever been.
If you or your friends are USM alumni, PLEASE WRITE TO THE IHL board and tell them that you are concerned about the future of the school and that Shelby Thames has to go.
