Gerald Mattson leaving is truly depressing.  He was an outstanding colleague and Faculty Senator.  People like this can't be replaced.  However, it does make my leaving much easier.

Scott Scherer was not a full-time assistant football coach.  He may have been a grad assistant or something like that.

info here, the lowercase one, not whoever posts as capitalized Info.

Scott Scherer is/was "Graduate Assistant Coach/Defense" according to the page maintained by Athletics, http://www.southernmiss.com/sports/football/coach/bio.asp?COACH_ID=428.

Thanks.  I wouldn't think you would want to include Graduate Assistants on the least of those leaving.

This is a serious loss to USM, but all best wishes to Lillian for a wonderful retirement!

NO QUARTER!

Jerry came by yesterday to the Faculty Senate meeting to say goodbye. David Beckett prevailed upon him to stay for the beginning of the meeting (he stayed through Joan's presentations) at which time David Beckett acknowleged his leaving and said some nice things. There was warm applause and that same mixture of sadness for us and for USM and joy for Jerry. He spoke strongly about his love for USM but cited Florida as his orginal home and the place where his family is -- but he also was warm in his words about his USM colleagues and urged the Senate to continue in its work and to continue to hold up the academic ideals that we have all worked and fought for.

Then he was gone.

Heard a rumor, perhaps verifiable by someone:

Marta Hofacre, professor of music, retired January 1?

What surprises me is how many are leaving during the middle of the academic year  (January 1). This is not unheard of of course, but under normal circumstances most resignations are effective at the end of the academic year. Many faculty members must be very eager to get out.

Don't know if the rumor is true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised.   Marta Hofacre has been desparately unhappy for years.  SFT is not her problem with USM.

Marta Hofacre was one of music's most brilliant and energetic faculty. She worked very hard to make the School of Music better. Her contributions were largely ignored, her efforts even opposed.

That school badly needs help from competent faculty like Marta. It's a shame to see someone like her driven away by the lack of respect, gratitude and support she so deserves.

She may be listed as "retired," but she is not retiring. She will be applying her talents to another profession in which she will excel.

I used to think that Marta Hofacre was a litte bit nuts. Then after I had been at USM for a while, she started to made lots of sense.

Working in USM's School of Music would drive any conscientious person nuts! Sorry!

Music is a microcosm of the whole school.  We are not in sync or harmonious.  This place will drive you nuts.  Do they offer free counseling for faculty, staff, and students.  Maybe that is Joe Paul's customer service.
