ad for International Development
Permalink Closed

Be sure to check out the latest issue of The Economist!  Right inside, opposite the table of contents is a full-page full color ad for the PhD program in International Development.  This ad will run three times at $128,600 a pop.  You can reach the ad by linking on the usm home page at the bottom, click on the International Development PhD program, then see the ad.

Nearly a half a million dollars has been spent on this ad.  I am stunned as we face fiscal cuts at USM.

If this ad runs only in the North American issue, it's only $80,000 a pop.

Amy,

Whoa! $240K is bad enough.

I brought the ad up as a PDF and got a really muddy rendition.  Can anyone read the fine print at the bottom?

the fine print says something about Carnegie and SREB status, also SACS. then it mentions something about our football tradition.

i've also heard that they are going to advertising in a number of trade magazines (don't know if the economist is considered one).

They're doing WHAT??????  Spending maybe 200K or better on a substandard program while saying they can't afford to cover the rise in their health care??????  WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE THEY THINKING OVER IN THE DOME??????

If they want to claim best business practices, they need to remember the importance of taking care of their work force.  My dad had his own business, and many's the time we went without something because he was overdrawn at the bank, but he NEVER, and I mean NEVER, missed paying his employees on time.

Say it ain't so . . . .

Mr. Lassen's dissertation advisor?  Probobly the same person that is Kim Compton's dissertation advisor.  Have 'yall head this story?  Ms. Compton employed at the Harrison County Economic Dev. Comm gets a neagitve vote from HCDC board to replace outgoing head Mike Oliver, so Ms. Comtpn resigns.  See link to "Board Rejects Compton as HCDC Leader".  See July 13, 2004 http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/9140153.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp

Then a couple of months later, USM has press release that Ms. Compton (also a doctoral student in International Development at USM) replaces College of Business Dr. Henthorne (previous Director of CENTED) as the new Director of USM's Center for Tourism and Economic Development Research (CENTED).  See Oct. 4, 2004

http://www.usm.edu/pr/prnews/oct04/compton04.htm

So I guess that Ms. Compton joins the Econ Dev. faculty on the coast, and Ms. Compton's dissertation advisor is her boss, Dr. Malone, Chair of the Dept.  Good work if you can get it I guess.

Whoo Hoo! That is not the one-and-only "approved" statement of SACS affiliation. As usual, I grabbed my scroll, er, copy of the Principles...
"An institution must be accurate in reporting to the public its status and relationship with the Commission. In catalogs, brochures, and advertisements, a member institution describes its relationship with the Commission only according with the following statement:
(Name of institution) is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award (name specific degree levels)."
And since I had to revisit the USM home page to get to the ad, I saw another violation:
"...Nor may an institution use the logo or seal of the Southern Association in any of its publications or documents."
While these violations aren't as "serious" as failure to demonstrate systematic planning, evaluation & use of results (institutional effectiveness), they are violations nonetheless & bone-headed dumb ones at that. If SACS cares to pick nits, the nits shouldn't be that easy to find.

You don't step on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind. You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger. AND YOU DON'T MESS AROUND WITH SACS.

Invictus, scm, et al.

I got better results viewing the PDF on my Macintosh.

"The University of Southern Mississippi is an accredited Carnegie Research-Extensive Institution, is ranked as a Southern Regional Education Board Class I University, and is a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. We also have a fine football tradition..."

OK, it takes the name of SACS in vain. And I didn't realize that the Carnegie Foundation did any accrediting

To top it all off, USM didn't even bother to correct the typo of "folllowing" on the online survey.  Surely, this will only attract the most serious students.

The perfect match!

Yes, readers of The Economist are definately the ones who will be most attracted to marketing tools like the on-line questionnaire...just wait until they hear about the field trips and the football team!

I guess USM Intl. Dev. is gearing up for all those anticipated Ph.D. students by advertising for some new professors.  Question:  Which CURRENT faculty in Econ. Dev. would meet these qualifications?  And the requirements don't seem to match any business criteria either, see help wanted ad below:

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR

International Development - Two Positions

The Department of Political Science, International Development and International Affairs of The University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Park Campus (Long Beach, Mississippi), invite application for two positions in the International Development Doctoral Program. The first position is for a senior, tenurable faculty member at the associate professor level or higher and the second is for a junior, tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. The positions begin in the 2005-2006 academic year. A willingness and ability to teach in an executive format is required. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in political science, sociology, anthropology, geography, economics or a social science field, completed at the time of appointment. A substantial research record, quality teaching, and service (including student advising) are required for tenure and promotion.

A letter of application, vita, graduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, evidence of classroom performance (if available), and a writing sample should be sent to David Butler, Search Committee Chair, The University of Southern Mississippi, 730 East Beach Blvd., Long Beach, MS 39560.

Sorry not to give the source for the above job announcement, it came from the Chronicle of Higer Education web site.

A willingness and ability . . .

Heck yeah, you'd better have a "willingness" - a willingness for deceit.

What's an "executive format"? Is it a common term in higher education?

As I read this ad, Frank Glamser would qualify - - - hey, if Tulane doesn't work out! On a serious note, however, did I miss the words "economic development" in there somewhere?? Somebody should also alert our friend Mr. Ramsey that at last a use has been found for an anthroplogy degree.

I doubt that Butler really plans to exclude applicants with the "unique" USM Economic Development Ph.D.

Does anyone think Kenbot will apply for the job and then officially have tenure and rank?  I don't recall Kenbot having any tenure or tenure-track appointment.

Why should Ken Malone bother?  Richard Hadden has become a Professor of Economic Development by proclamation...

No wonder Econ Dev (DBA International Dev) had to get out of the College of Business.  AACSB would boot that degree out with a big laugh.  Good point about Kenbot RC, seems anyone can be a prof in Econ Dev.  I saw one dissertation that Dr. Dvorak seemed to have a lot of input on.  AD would be an excellent full prof in the ED area, you think?

Before the second round of website sanitization early last spring, she was listed as an associate professor in economic development?

That is a frightening thought!

What is the difference between being accredited and being fully accredited (per ACCRA or AFFRA, can't remember, website use)?  How long before it is announced that we have purchased, I mean earned, accreditation from some previously unheard of agency?

SACS clearly states that it is inappropriate to use the phrase "fully accredited." it implies you could be "partially accredited" which isn't the case. you're accredited or not.

Then someone ought to check out that website, I think it's an economic development association website and I think it is promoting the executive masters program in economic development.  I'm sure it wouldn't want to get in any trouble for promoting false information.

i don't think it's false information, it's just inappropriate wording of our accreditation status. someone ought to know better, but i'm not surprised they don't.

Maybe it's because the "someones" AREN'T ACADEMICALLY QUALIFIED and with that wanton capitalization I will say good night.

i don't think it's a matter of academic qualifications. it's an unfamilarity with accreditation, and i've come to believe that lots of faculty aren't familiar with basics, let alone the details.

There are currently six USM ads (for seven positions) in the Chronicle.  The above referenced ad is notable for having a very short window.  The ad was placed on December 9 with an application deadline of January 15.  None of the other ads, including the ones advertising for chairs in math and foreign languages, and the faculty positions in french, disability studies and technology, have noted an application deadline, let alone such a short window over the holidays.  Interesting.
