On the topic of Birmingham Southern College:

While those who are not closely related to Alabama may still believe that BSC is a "great" school, those of us who have EXTREMELY close ties to the state know that BSC no longer delivers on what its reputation promises. It is no longer the rising star of liberal arts colleges; in fact, a friend of mine decided to send his daughter to Rhodes College instead of BSC because of BSC's decline. The University of Montevallo is a better choice for a lib. arts education in AL with respect to "bang for the buck."

I can imagine how Jackson State would react if there was a move to change their name to "University of Middle Mississippi," or how Ole Miss would react if there was a move to change their name to "University of Northern Mississippi." But here we are, pleased as punch with "University of Southern Mississippi." Tradition, I guess.

I'm sure you know that Rhodes was formerly known as Southwestern at Memphis. Even then it had a good reputation. My prediction is that if USM's nom is ever changed it will carry the moniker of whoever contributes a vast sum to the institution. Money will purchase the name. The possibilities are endless. And intriguing. And frightening!

Are you sure your friend didn't send his daughter to Rhodes instead of Birmingham Southern because Memphis is closer to his home than is Birmingham?

If a family of dentists and a polymer professor shell out the big endowment, it will be Thames Polydent University.

I just sent copies of four of these letters to the IHL, along with the following note of my own. I urge others on the board to flood the IHL with copies of these letters from the CL.

Dear IHL Board Members,

Please notice that public focus is beginning to turn from the ineptness of Shelby Thames to the ineptness of the IHL in dealing with him. In the final analysis, the IHL will be left holding Shelby Thames's bag -- unless the IHL acts quickly to remove Shelby Thames.
