Okay, if this wasn't such a serious problem, this would be funny (from the USM website: http://www.usm.edu/ie/qa.htm --I bolded the text that I would call "spin"):
Q: What is probation?
A: When SACS is concerned that a university isn’t meeting all the standards, or doesn't have the proper documents to show that it is in compliance with the standards, it can send the university a private notice, send a public warning, or put it on probation for a period of time (usually one year or two years). In December 2004, SACS decided to put Southern Miss on probation for 12 months. SACS wants more evidence over a longer period of time that Southern Miss is assessing and reporting improvements of our educational programs on a comprehensive, university-wide basis.
Q: Why didn't Southern Miss meet the requirements regarding institutional effectiveness?
A: Southern Miss was not put on probation because of any problems with academic quality or financial management. SACS simply did not have the evidence they needed regarding comprehensive, university-wide program assessments. The lack of documentation and consistency can be traced to changes in personnel since 1997.
Q: Does that mean probation isn't that serious?
A: Southern Miss takes probation very seriously. Dr. Shelby Thames, president of the university, has made the removal of probation status the highest priority. In fact, oversight for all accreditation has been moved to the Office of the President, where he will be assisted by the assistant to the president for accreditation, planning, and articulation. In addition, a position dedicated to assisting faculty with program assessment has been created. Many processes are already in place to provide the evidence that SACS needs. Therefore, Southern Miss fully expects the probation to be lifted after the 12 month period elapses.
Q: What does probation mean for my degree?
A: Southern Miss is a world-class university. None of the information that we must supply to SACS suggests that our educational programs are not of high quality. Anyone with Southern Miss degree has evidence of an excellent education!
[note from Truth: this entire answer above qualifies for spin..."we're wurl' class because we say we are!"]

Truth, if I may amplify your editorial comment, a quote from Al Pacino's Oscar winning performance in "Scent of A Woman" seems appropriate here:

Q. How did you determine that your programs are of high quality if you don't have the evidence from assessment?
A. Our leader SFT says we have a "World-Class University". All of our Press Releases say we are a "World-Class University". SACS does not have any information from us to prove otherwise. "None of the information that we must supply to SACS suggests that our educational programs are not of high quality". I can assure you of this without reading or even having the information. Therefore, students can be confident they will get a "world-class" education at Southern Miss.

"What a crock of $h*t!" Thank you non-believer. Say it often and say it loud.

Indeed they have, and in almost those words, but not here. I learned the artful use of such language in the Navy and I'm certainly not averse to it now, but quoting a movie allows me to sidestep using a vulgarity in this dignified, high-minded public forum. Not that I'm unacquainted with the expression mind you, but there's always decorum to maintain. Besides, Pacino delivered the line with such passion (courtroom scene) that I can easily imagine those words coming from Noel Polk at a faculty senate meeting. That imagery was too rich to pass up. :biggrin

I had no idea that quoting a line from a movie allowed one to sidestep vulgarity in a dignified and high-minded way. Thank you, Non-Believer, for allowing me that literary license. I am always dignified and high-minded, and I do not want to be categorized as as a foul-mouth, so I too will quote from a movie in order to say what I have wanted to say since the day of that fumbling, bumbling attempt to give Stringer and Glamser their marching orders. So . . . . as Jack Nicholson said to Tom Cruise in the movie "A Few Good Men": USM - You've done gone and ------ with the wrong marines.

Mr. Rogers,
Yes, I think you're getting the hang of it. I too am nothing if not dignified and high-minded, or as the president once declared, "an officer and a gentleman," so you may be assured that I know whereof I speak. One may always maintain the high road by offering relevant quotes from well known potty mouths, thus maintaining personal purity. Keeping that in mind, there's always a suitably salty quote available for every occasion, as you've just demonstrated. Now go forth and keep up the perfectly great work.

Hey - I would like to add my quote to the stack. Kelsey Gramer in "Up Periscope" when he said "Let's kick this pig".
"Now that you've got the mine, I'll bet you'll be a swell gold digger" from the movie Way Out West should be added to the collection of meaningful lines relevant to USM.

and what could more appropriate than a quote from Mr. Smith goes to Washington - "I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness and a - a little looking out for the other fella, too..."
I don't know exactly. There's a DVD with movie clips and trivia questions about the movie clips. I got the impression that it was like Trivial Pursuit for movie buffs. Actually, I don't want to hear anything bad b/c I just sent it to distant relatives!

Evidently, as you suggest, you don't understand. No self respecting university describes its faculty or itself as being "world class." (or "wurl' class" as USM PR tries to tell the media.) Such absurb statements embarass the faculty. The academic world is laughing at USM proclaiming such an idiotic cesspool of nonsense. Trolls haven't fared very well on this message board. It is unlikely that you will either.
