And weren't there remarks by Klumb on the radio program where the "Clean House" statements came out?

TheMan - If you're a USM alum - PLEASE, PLEASE don't wear your black & gold in public. You'd shame us all.

Flit: It's good for ridding the board of roaches, fleas, mites, lice, and trolls. Works best on trolls.

If the trolls are back, it means we must be doing something right (hitting a nerve).

NO QUARTER!

TheMan, if you knew what a University was you would know that it was the business of the faculty, in fact, it was their duty to the profession and the citizens of this state.  A lot of the problems with SACS would not exist today if "Shared Governance" was the management style.  And shared governance is not just used in academia, but by successful corporations.

Finally, if SFT had "kept his nose on the business of the university he would be able to keep his job".  No need to disagree. Let us just wait and see happens to see who is correct.

TheMan: We'd rather keep our noses in our university, thank you, rather than in a "business." But how perceptive of you to notice that our university has turned into a business. Would you really want to receive a degree from a business? If so, you might want to look into what K-Mart has to offer. They might be offering a Blue Light Special this weekend in English Literature. Business, my a**.

English Literature? now THERE is a degree in demand.

Might as well have gotton it from K mart considering what good it will do me in anything outside of 'academia.'

Degrees like that survive by regurgitation alone.

TheMan -

I'm sure we are all stung by your biting sarcasm.  And don't go knocking academia.  If it weren't for a teacher, you wouldn't be able to read this board, let alone bother the people posting on it.

Actually, it might be helpful for someone to find that long thread on the value of a liberal arts education and kick it up, since it includes information on the high percentage of liberal arts degrees among CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.

I'm assuming that "useful" means productive of income, of course.  While I don't agree that an supersized paycheck is the apex of civilization, I will point out that an English degree doesn't rule one out.  My own position on learning and conspicuous wealth is summed up in a Latin proverb:  Homo doctus in se semper divitias habet (The learned person always has riches within).

Jameela,

After reading your cute little italian proverb, one thing immediately poppped into my mind. I shall share it with you now.

Max - My teacher says real beauty's on the inside.
Fletcher - That's just something ugly people say.

- Liar, Liar

I'm sure you can figure the relevence out.

Wow, you offer a lot to shoot at man. Confusing Latin with Italian? And "Liar, Liar?" Using a lame joke as if it were an aphorism?

If you really believe that only "ugly" people see anything other than superficial beauty, then the chasm is probably too wide to cross. I really hope you were just lashing out, trying to pose that venerable question, "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?"

I was put in mind of the valiant imbecile, who struggles to tie his shoes and wonders why those who can, do not devote all their time and energy to their own laces.

I see your point, my apologies.

I only hope to, at one point in my life, have the accuracy and quality of a Tier 4 school professor like those at USM.

Only the one insulted can accept the apology, so I leave that to others.

BTW, many (if not most) of the posters are not faculty. For example, I am just an anonymous alumnus of USM who has worked in the corporate world for getting on twenty years now.

ram - I, too, am in the corporate world. Have been there for just over two years -ever since USM was miraculously transformed from a university into a business!

I'm no longer a professor at USM, but I care deeply about USM and the people who have remained there and have not sold out to the Admiral of the sinking ship (and she was a fine one indeed).
