If I were a taxpayer in the state of Mississippi I would be disgusted at the amount of money that has been, and continues to be, wasted to dig Shelby Thames out the of the various holes he has dug for himself.  If USM really WERE a business, this guy would have been fired long ago.

"I never (saw) the word warning or anything like that and I don't think we need to do that."

Is there a literacy program for adults in Mississippi? I think we need to send Shelby. He obviously can't read.

If USM really were a business, he wouldn't have worked for the same employer for nearly 40 years. I don't think he would have worked for the same employer for more than about six months at a stretch.

Historical question: I know the Polymer Science department was essentially formed as a "department of one" when SFT was voted out of the Chemistry department due to his continual personality clashes with other profs. My question is, "How did he get tenure?" I've always assumed that one's department is the first step in the tenure process. Was SFT allowed to tenure himself in the Polymer Science department?

I've never been straight on that. I came on the scene about the time that Polymer Science succeeded in blowing up the Walker Building.

Vic, I don't know for sure, but don't you imagine that he had tenure before he split off and created his Dept. of 1?  That's what I always suspected.

The Polymer Science department (2 labs, I think) was originally located in the 1st floor cross-over area in Walker. During 1971-72 -- I think fall quarter, but I may be wrong on that -- one of the labs exploded, essentially gutting that floor. I remember it, because we spent a lot of time in honors biology lab disassembling, cleaning & reassembling microscopes that had smoke damage. This probably was more valuable to me in the long run than the labs the instructor had planned.

IIRC, the explosion occurred at night. One of my pals was in a freshman physics lab on the 2nd floor above the polymer lab & he told me later that his pendulum went crazy & then a wall of flame shot up past the window.

After the reconstruction, polymer science had a little storage building constructed on the west side of Walker & nobody was allowed to smoke in classes again. (I remember the old rule, "If you smoke, bring your own ashtray.")

Dr. Invictus,

They couldn't smoke in classes again?  I suppose the image you suggest is funnier to me than those who haven't had the pleasure of spending hundreds of hours in a chemistry research lab. I'm literally sitting here before the monitor guffawing like a fool, enjoying the rich image of Shelby Thames in his laboratory surrounded by thousands of volatile organic compounds  wearing striped overalls and a Mississippi Catfish ball cap, a hand rolled cigarette hanging from his lower lip with one of those long, long ashes that never seems to fall, saying "Boys, I guess they gone make us stop  smokin roun' these he'uh  chemicals now.  But ya'all can foller me on out to the poach an' smoke 'em if ya got 'em." Thanks for the best laugh of the day.

Yeah. Now, remember what I got was what a freshman hears, but the story was that one of the grad students left a cigarette in an ashtray on the lab bench & stepped out of the lab. Dunno if that's true. But it is true that polymer science blew the out of Walker Building.

My favorite smoking in class story was my "Analytic Geometry" (Calculus I) teacher, who would smoke while pacing in front of the chalkboard. One morning, he lit up & got so involved in his lecture that he smashed his cigarette on the board & stuck the chalk in his mouth.

How his daughter Dana got tenure is even a better story.  Most that told the story best are now deceased, but her pitiful c.v. tested many people's own professional beliefs. BTW that c.v. is still floating around in different spots. I've seen it, and it is a hoot.

I've seen it, and it is a joke. She was DAYNA while in high school and became DAAnA upon her return to Hburg.  Many USM degrees later.
