USM's Lessons from the South Pole

"Great God! This is an Awful Place."  - R.F. Scott, 1910 (the year USM was founded).

The British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) was successful in reaching the South Pole but none of the participants survived to tell about it.

"Amputation is the least I can hope for." - R.F. Scott, 1913

"It is more than our share of misfortune . . . No foresight . . . no procedure - could have prepared us for this state of affairs. Had we been ten times as experienced or certain of our aim we should not have expected such rebuffs . . . It's real hard luck." [R.F. Scott's Explanation of the Failure of the South Pole Expedition].

Let us off of this terrible academic iceburg, IHL, before we and the university sink.

If the Mississippi IHL was a hospital emergency room, and USM was a patient in cardiac arrest, USM would not even make it off the table. No help whatsoever from the IHLl - thusfar.
