It looks like Shelby Thames got what he was clamoring for. His conduct leads to a pile of Public Records Act requests...so more USM funds have to be spent on outside lawyers to deal with the requests.

I'm sure that SCM is correct, because the "pistol-packing professor" Chauncey Marcelleous Depree, has been "mail-bombing" the entire USM faculty LISTSERV with copies of his correspondence, and the iTech spam filters can't seem to keep everyone from getting these screeds from him.
Anybody remember his self-published "Choking Dead Chickens" e-zine?

Re Outside Council (sic): I have a background question. What is the purpose of, or reason for the information request by the faculty member in question (Mr. Dupree?)? Will production of the records he's requesting somehow benefit the university, or the faculty? If not, it seems like a collosal waste of money. And as a naive follow-up question, why does it require a $175/hr attorney to retrieve records which are by definition in the public domain? Is there something to hide? Why couldn't a work-study student sift through old files at $7, $8, $9 an hour?
It's interesting that this single request for outside counsel makes the news whereas last month (or the month before) the IHL approved not one but three different requests from USM for outside counsel and nary a word about it. Check the minutes.

I suspect there is much to hide. It wouldn't surprise me if there were lots of bones buried in the archives.
