Big Differences between Auburn and USM

Auburn is about 60 years older than USM.

Auburn has over 20,000 students, while USM (if truth be told) has less than 15,000 students.

Auburn is one of the Top 50 Public Universities in the USA and resides in Tier 2 overall, USM recently moved down the scale from Tier 3 to Tier 4.

Auburn has historically had the most Fortune 500 CEOs among all of the SEC schools, and she has historically maintained a top 3 position among SEC schools in terms of success with her students gaining admission to medical schools.

While USM alumni sit silent at the sight of controversy, polls consistently show that the three most active groups of alumni in the US are those at Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Auburn.

In sports . . . .

USM just finished 6-5 in football and is headed to the New Orleans Bowl where she will bring home $750,000.  Auburn just went 12-0 and is going to the Sugar Bowl to pick up $14,000,000.

Unlike USM, which typically loses more than it wins in all other sports, Auburn has the best men's and women's swimming programs in all of America (3 straight NCAA women's crowns and 4 men's crowns in past 7 years).  In recent years, Auburn's men's track teams have finished as high as 2nd in the nation, and the Auburn soccer team is arguably the best program in the SEC.  In his 4-year career at Stanford, the only NCAA title Tiger Woods failed to win was the one he lost out on to a kid from Auburn.  Auburn women's golf program has been ranked #1 in the nation in 3 of the past 4 seasons (at some point), and early this year both men's/women's teams were simultaneously ranked #1.

Auburn is a large, residential campus with real traditions (rolling Toomer's Corner, "War Eagle," etc.).  USM is a small, commuter campus with manufactured "traditions" (Nitchampburg, etc.).

In it's recent SACs scandal, Auburn lost a President and a Trustee.  In it's current SACs scandal, USM _____ a President and an IHL Board Member.

We must await the rest of the story.

I used to ask myself why USM has so few "traditions." I concluded that it probably because USM has been subject to fads. Fadish programs (bailbondmanship, others, and now economic development) for example. Also, the football team was once referred to as "The Nasty Bunch." I haven't heard that term used for quite a while. USM used to call itself "The Career University (how horrible!"). There was also "University for the Gulf South (I liked that one but the term disappeared when Fleming disappeared). And there was the slogan "For all the reasons you go to college." More recently the athletic program used something like "Anywhere, Anytime, Anyplace, Anyone" (or some such slogan which seems to have rapidly declined in popularity). And, of course, the Eagle in the cage died of starvation. We seem to have a tradition of not having traditions. Nitchampburg? I'll bet that term will disappear as fast as USM's reputation is disappearing.

And USM's greatest slogan ever -- "USM. For all it's worth."
