Underground Communication among Faculty

This message board is a Godsend. But it is unfortunate that email surveillance and other campus actions related to open communication, attempts at termination of tenured faculty members, and freedom of speech, has forced faculty to go underground whereas they would be able to speak openly if at another university. USA Today describes only one of the erosive effects. It seems that many businesses and industry is trying to open up direct communication among their employees who otherwise resort to faceless email talk. Perhaps the day will come when USM faculty can engage in open discussion about important issues and without fear of retaliation.

CHICAGO, Dec 07, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A growing number of big U.S. companies are taking steps to force their workers to actually speak with one another instead of e-mailing, USA Today reported.

Not long ago, I was having lunch at a Hattiesburg coffee shop.  I borrowed a newspaper from a friendly looking patron - seems we had both wanted to read about Angie Dvorak's appointment to the ADP.  Soon afterwards a young person, apparently a student, came in and called this professor by name.  I almost burst out laughing because it turned out to be someone I had been "communicating" with for months on this (and the FireShelby) message board(s).  The sad part is that I let the moment pass without introduction or comment...

Things got that some will not even use the USM email service for communicating. Heaven help us when industry is healthier than academics in that respect.

Last summer there was talk on the PUC of developing an email surveillance policy for the university. Did anything ever come of that?

I'll be curious to see, if/when there is a coming out party, how many of us actually already know each other. I had that experience this summer, where someone confessed her board name to me, and I confessed mine, and we both laughed alot. I know that there are people on this board I would have never encountered otherwise.

I'll also be curious if we'll discover we've actually been in agreement on the board with that person we had never liked much in real life. . . .

Seriously, the repressive atmosphere that the Thames regime has established is in contrary to everything that a university stands for.

The board has fostered a sense of community. I like all of you - the mean, the ugly, and the grumpy. I will overlook the warts on your noses at the grand unveiling if you will overlook mine.

The Song of the Jellicles

Jellicle Cats come out tonight,
Jellicle Cats come one come all:
The Jellicle Moon is shining bright--
Jellicles come to the Jellicle Ball.

Jellicle Cats are black and white,
Jellicle Cats are rather small;
Jellicle Cats are merry and bright,
And pleasant to hear when they caterwaul.
Jellicle Cats have cheerful faces,
Jellicle Cats have bright black eyes;
They like to practise their airs and graces
And wait for the Jellicle Moon to rise.

Jellicle Cats develop slowly,
Jellicle Cats are not too big;
Jellicle Cats are roly-poly,
They know how to dance a gavotte and a jig.
Until the Jellicle Moon appears
They make their toilette and take their repose:
Jellicles wash behind their ears,
Jellicles dry between their toes.

Jellicle Cats are white and black,
Jellicle Cats are of moderate size;
Jellicles jump like a jumping-jack,
Jellicle Cats have moonlit eyes.
They're quiet enough in the morning hours,
They're quiet enough in the afternoon,
Reserving their terpsichorean powers
To dance by the light of the Jellicle Moon.

Jellicle Cats are black and white,
Jellicle Cats (as I said) are small;
If it happens to be a stormy night
They will practise a caper or two in the hall.
If it happens the sun is shining bright
You would say they had nothing to do at all:
They are resting and saving themselves to be right
For the Jellicle Moon and the Jellicle Ball.
