Brad Bond, our esteemed former colleague, is Dean of the Graduate School at NIU. He must be experiencing a tragedy that none of us expect to face in an academic career.

My son attends NIU, and just happened to be in St Louis when the shootings happened. He called me and said, "Before you see the news, I'm in St. Louis and I"m ok". I asked him why he called to tell me that, and the next words were "There's been a shooting on campus".

I guess it just goes to show this can happen any where and at any time. My heart goes out to those who suffered a loss, and I am really very thankful it wasn't worse.

I think it would help if the news networks refused to show the picture of these nut cases day and night for a month. That only makes them a celebrity to be emulated by the next shooter.
