A few days back, I posted a note under another thread that I'd be asking the Chronicle of Higher Education with a free link to the following story:

AAUP Criticizes Medical College in Tennessee, Accusing It of Firing Faculty Critics
By KATHERINE S. MANGAN
Tuesday, November 23, 2004

They have kindly provided the following:

The link will expire on January 29, 2005.

Geez, doesn't this sound familiar? Reminds me of some place I know . . . .

From that article: "The AAUP's Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure will review the Meharry report, as well as any subsequent actions the medical school takes, and decide whether to recommend that the college be censured at the association's annual meeting, in June."

Why has this NOT been done at Southern Miss. What has to "happen" before they send a team of investigators HERE???????

Great question.

I can think of one possible benefit coming out of the recent tierdrop--the national office of the AAUP may finally get around to sending investigators to USM.

For many years, the national AAUP has avoided investigating administrative malfeasance at the more prestigious universities.  I'm under the impression, like other contributors here, that the really awful stuff is less common in Tier 1 institutions--but less common doesn't equal nonexistent.   What's really going on is that the AAUP's leadership is afraid of censuring a prominent university whose administration could then thumb its nose at  the AAUP indefinitely, while continuing to hire the faculty members that it wants to hire.

I know of two occasions on which the national AAUP was asked to send investigators to Clemson.  On both occasions there were charges of serious administrative malfeasance toward faculty; on one of them there was a pretty blatant abridgment of academic freedom.  No action was taken.  Clemson is a second-tier university.  The national AAUP has taken action against a couple of other schools in South Carolina--Francis Marion and Charleston Southern.  I don't believe either qualifies as a "national university" in the US News rankings.

Make sure that Jane Buck and the other folks in the AAUP national office know that USM is ranked in the 4th tier.
