Today's HA has a letter by Shannon Yates advocating the firing of Bower. Am I losing my mind, or has not this same person recently had a letter printed along the same lines? Why is that name and that topic familar?
Question for Shannon Yates: just who the heck do you think is burning to come to USM?? Get real!
Is this the beginning of the big anti-Bower letter writing campaign that board members have been predicting? I suspect we will be seeing more letters . . .

Santa is making a list and checking it twice. The names of those writing such letters will be placed on the list will not get Superbowl tickets.
If these folks who are writing those "fire Bower" letters to the newspaper had paid attention to many football games they'd realize that each game has a winner and a loser. So what's the big deal? Surely they don't think the win-loss record is the important thing. If so, why not just adopt a professional team ? Maybe football builds character in the players, but from what I have read it sure generates something less than desirable in the fair-weather friends. I wonder if these letter-writers realize how silly their letters look in the eyes of the general reading public (football has far less support among the general public than one might think. Only the loud vocal minority).
Last year Nebraska fired their coach because he went 9-2. The new coach went 5-6 this year, the first losing season for Nebraska in over 40 years. Things don't always get better when you fire a coach. Given the limited prestige, resources and facilities at USM relative to the surrounding SEC programs, Jeff Bower might be doing as well as can be expected.
Today Stanford University fired their football coach who was evidently a very close friend of the president. It was the same coach fired by Tulane a few short years ago. If there were two coaching jobs open, one at Stanford and one at USM, which school would have the pick of the litter?
I never understood what spectators enjoy watching grown men prancing around on the grass, slaping one another on the butt, and tossing a dead pig in the air while others dressed as zebras blow whistles and throw yellow ribbons into the grass. Give me NASCAR racing anytime.

At least with NASCAR, as opposed to football, there aren't a lot of ungrateful racing fans writing letters to the newspapers saying 'fire the driver.'
I found this from last December _________________________________
I would like to reply to the comments made by Shannon Yates ("It's time for change at USM," Dec. 4). Yates comments that "a certain Hattiesburg team needs a shakeup" and "I'm sick of these 9-3 seasons.
A 9-3 season is nothing to sneeze at. I am delighted that the USM Golden Eagles have been so successful this season. Beating 10th-ranked TCU was one of the biggest victories in USM history. Winning a Conference USA championship? It must mean nothing to you.
Don't criticize USM's coaching staff, especially when they are as successful as they have been this season.
We should be giving Jeff Bower a raise instead of trying to get him fired.

Naw, them NASCAR fans write stuff like, "Shoot the driver" or "Push him over the wall"...
