The "Babies" reference is directed at Gianinny - not the person who wrote such a great letter. Thought I should make this clear since this Board likes to get a bit surly at times!!

From the football article:
"After the TCU game, coaches and players said the Eagles came out flat, without emotion against the Horned Frogs.
I think all three articles happen to be related. After the bond bill failed, Giannini essentially "gave up on the team." His comments were essentially those of a "sore loser" -- exactly the attitude that coaches claim that they want their players not to have. Halfway through the season, the team is seeing this "the City of Hattiesburg has given up on the University" stuff splashed all over the paper & people have to wonder why they quit caring about whether they won or lost? Gimme a break.

Anybody who thinks that players don't read the paper & don't reflect the attitude of the athletic department lives in a fantasy land where USM actually stands a chance at being anything other than a mid-major in athletics.

Giannini, not Bower, is the one who deserves to be in the president's office explaining why he (who is no more a resident of the City of Hattiesburg than I am) made those comments without clearing them through Lisa S. "Positive Spin" Mader's office. Has that happened?

Or did he clear the comments with Mader?

Invictus,  Sorry, I've not responded.....Thanksgiving and all, I'm just getting to the messages.

I have it on good authority that Giannini had five drafts of his statement before it was "cleared" for printing in the HA by LSM .

Thanks, Green. I'm glad you waited until my Thanksgiving dinner settled before you posted this. I shudder to think what the first draft must've looked like.

Up until this point, I've been pretty impressed with Giannini as an AD. But now he comes off as exactly what coaches try to teach players not to be: a sore loser.

Speaking of censorship, I recall a time when any USM department wanting to bring in an outside speaker was required to obtain permission from the administration. There was even a transmittal form designed for this purpose. I always assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the speaker permission policy was established during the McCain era. I have three questions: (a) Was the speaker permission requirement an IHL policy applicable to all of Mississippi's pubic universities, or was it a USM generated policy and specific only to us? (b) Is the policy still in effect but just being ignored, or was it formally abolished? I am sure that learning such a policy existed will surprise (and maybe horrify) some of the newbys out there, but I am confident some of you oldtimers know the answer to all three of my questions.

I neglected to include my third question: (c) who was the USM president when the speaker permission policy fall into oblivion?

My understanding from Exit 13 was that this was an IHL rule for all schools to keep out “troublemakers” (civil rights people, etc)

Invictus,

The "drafts" were increasing critical of Hattiesburg community and the mayor.  This administration "wanted" to send a message....SFT was going to war with the mayor.  Hence, the announcement by Lee Jarrell Davis of his mayoral bid on the steps of the Lucus administration building.............and other things..........
