Part of a news story from today's Chronicle of Higher Education:
"Meharry Medical College has retaliated against faculty critics by refusing to renew their contracts and has denied them long-term employee rights to which they are entitled, according to a report issued this week by the American Association of University Professors."
"The national faculty group sent a team of investigators to the Nashville campus in February after learning that 13 veteran professors had received termination notices last year that gave them six months to find new jobs. Only about 10 percent of Meharry's faculty members have tenure, but most of the employees who lost their jobs had been with the college for at least seven years and, according to the AAUP, were entitled to the same protections as tenured professors."
I'll contact the Chronicle to see if they will allow us a free link to the story, which seems relevant to our present situation at USM.

I did a search at our local paper's website to see if I could find anything on the Meharry incident, but was only able to locate a blurb for a story that I'd have to buy in order to read in full. FYI, Meharry is an HBCU that is very near (in proximity) to Fisk University in Nashville. I don't know if they have any formal ties, though. I do know that Vanderbilt's Medical Center and Meharry have some joint programs, though I don't know if they are academic in nature.

Its too bad that AAUP wasn't as agressive in investigating Shelboo's firing of Frank and Gary.
