Film Program Moving to the Gulf Coast
Permalink Closed

Tuesday's Student Printz had a story on the film program's upcoming move to the Gulf Coast campus, effective fall 2005. Students who are juniors and below will have to take their classes on the coast if they want to remain in the program. No more film program on the Hattiesburg campus.

Film professor Dixon McDowell says the move will be beneficial to the program.

USM-Hattiesburg is like one big egg. A Humpty Dumpty egg. This is just one more crack in the egg.

Students already in the film program may be willing to move to finish their major, but will Hattiesburg students be willing to select a major which requires that they leave the main campus and all its activities and facilities? It won't take long to find out.

Could it be that the Gulf Coast will become the main campus??? The gradual relocation of programs to that campus makes one wonder. As El Pood said in the Printz story, it's "location, location, location."

I thought that drama, theatre, and related disciplines were considered to be among the really good programs in Hattiesburg. Surely film is considered to be a related discipline. It is most certainly a compatible discipline. And what's this in the article that speaks of the "entertainment" industry on the coast as a support for the film program. Are they talking about the gambling industry and the shows in those establishments? The only other major entertainments I know about down there are the kiddy rides along the beach, swimming (no surfing), and sunbathing. Excluding, of course, any of the entertinment depicted in "Biloxi Blues." I don't see how Gulf Coast "entertainment" could possibly be significantly related to film production.

The doctoral program in economic development. And now the undergraduate program in film. Which will be next?

How could you ever establish an academic program where there is no football program?

On a related matter, has anyone heard about the School of Nursing moving "lock, stock, & barrel" to the Gulfcoast???????

No, but it would make sense. Southern Miss acquired the former hospital property in Gulfport, which might be suitable space for the program; Southern Miss could unload the Albertson's building to help toward "repaying" the $3 million used for the Trent Lott Center; and the current Nursing building could be used to house any number of units that Cynthia Moore is trying to find space for on the Hattiesburg campus.

Hornet, you are not one known for making jokes on this board. This thing you say about the possibility of Nursing moving to the Coast is bothersome.

This is a well known development. Administration is working with Gene Taylor to provide some rationale to bolster the Gulfport VA hospital. Moving nursing down to the coast would help that effort. The coast is a beautiful place to live. You're not as isolated as in H'burg

No joke, this could happen.  As Florence says above......................it would make sense.

The question is (as posted above by another) would "freshmen" consider coming to Southern Miss if "they" had to be on the Gulfcoast and away from the "university" activities, greek life, student activities, etc..................

Moving nursing to the coast would bolster the Gulfport VA hospital? Is that the function of our university? That's about the most unsound reason for moving an entire academic program I have ever heard (with the possible exception of moving the film program there because of the entertainment).

What do you plan to do with all of the current USM buildings when the times comes that there are few viable academic programs left on the Hattiesburg campus? I'll bet there will be some good buys on the housing market when that time comes.

I can't answer the questions above.  But, this administration has made decisions that have not been thought out.  For example:  No dorms, no housing, no student activities, no greek life, limited library resources, etc. They (this administration) needs to think long and hard before they start moving programs to the coast.

Freshmen who want the traditional, residential experience could still come to the Hattiesburg campus for the first two years. I don't think students are admitted to the nursing program, per se, until their junior year (I could be mistaken about this). This would not be unlike nursing majors who attend Ole Miss in Oxford for two years (for the social/Greek Life experience) who then transfer to the Med Center in Jackson to complete the degree. Kind of like the pre-professional programs that are housed in COST (pre-med, pre-pharmacy, etc.)

Between the new programs which have and will be earmarked for Jackson State, and those evidently earmarked for the Gulf Coast, what will be left for Hattiesburg? And this is called supporting the Hub City? Think again, kiddies.

Yes indeedy. We could become the largest two-year community college in the state. Go for it!

The community colleges already feed more of their students to Southern Miss than to all of the other IHL institutions combined. What you're suggesting means we could feed ourselves. Wow!

You mean we're also moving the football program to the Coast? That thing looks more like a decorative nasal ring to me.

"Juniors and sophomores in the program have been informed
about the move to the coast so they can choose whether to remain in the program or change majors to stay in Hattiesburg .."

The above sentence is from the Student Printz aritcle. I have never heard of a university shuting down a program on its campus without giving sufficient notice to currently enrolled students and allowing them to finish the program. And I don't mean moving to another geographical location to finish it. Something seems very, very wrong here. Are there any SACS guidelines governing such an action? I hope so. This does not seem right for the students.

Hey, guys, this rumor has been going around the campus for years.  All of the faculty (well, all 2-3 of them) have talked about moving the film department to the Coast for at least the past few years.  I don't think this is news to any of the current students.  I'm sure they've heard the faculty talk about this before.

And the reason has nothing to do with students, location, entertainment industry, etc.  It has to do with the fact that the faculty members in film want to live on the Coast, not in Hattiesburg.

I am skeptical about this being the reason for the reported move to the Coast.  I suspect if the motive to move an entire program were based solely -- or even significantly -- on the wants of the faculty members, that would (a) set an interesting precedent, and (b) have been highly publicized.

Maybe we should wait and see what the Varsity Voice reports.

The film program is a relatively expensive, small enrollment program. If the move to the coast causes a drop in enrollment, it would be easy to just kill the program.

Surely, there are no such precedents.  The economic development department should be held up as the model for using a pedagogical foundation in driving such important program relocations.

USM-H could very well relocate itself out of business. Why not just put the current non-essential programs on a table and let the Coast campus pick and choose. This two-campus system is not working very well for Hattiesburg.

There was talk last year about moving the music industry program to the coast. I heard that Pood was pushing it and that the chair of music supported the idea. Don't know if anything is in the works.
