“Money USM set aside for "unanticipated needs" will be used to close the gap on funding the $15.8 million center and then the university will be reimbursed through future federal funds and private donations, said Lisa Mader, USM spokeswoman, on Tuesday.

"We are not depleting the university's funding were an emergency to arise of any nature," Mader said. "We always have a cushion for emergency needs."

However, she did not know how much was in the university's fund for unanticipated needs. Gregg Lassen, USM chief financial officer, did not return a phone call Tuesday to provide information but said earlier in the day that the money would be a combination of federal and private money.”

Is it just me, or is the design for the new Trent Lott Center butt-ugly? It looks asymmetrical, and the architectural style, at least from the artist's rendering printed in the HA, doesn't seem to mesh with or complement any of the other campus structures, old or new. It looks like a rather lame attempt to emulate classic Greek architecture, something one might expect from the Beverly Hillbillies' design team.

Is the photo of the architect's rendering available on the USM website? I can't seem to locate it, but that may be a function of my own ineptitude. I recall seeing it in the HA several weeks ago and having similar negative impressions. Now that the 3 mil has magically appeared, I'd like to see that photo again.

Come on Angeline, give these guys a break. You know it'll take big bucks to construct an edifice rivaling the William Randolph Hearst castle at San Simeon. I'd guess the imported Italian marble urinals alone will run about $100K each, and the gold plated plumbing fittings....well, I couldn't even speculate. I wonder how much is budgeted for statuary? I'd think at a minimum there'll be likenesses of Lott, Klumb, Thames and Dvorak positioned around the reflecting pool, right next to the Aramark hotdog & latte kiosk. At least that's the way I have it pictured.

I resemble that remark! Here's an artists rendering of Jethro's Beverly Hillbillies Mansion & Casnio, soon to be built on the site of the Carson City, NV, WalMart.

Jethro's Casino closely approximates my mental image of the palatial Klumb estate in Alabama. Which in turn reminds me of this unrelated anecdote. While attending a particularly acrimonious medical staff meeting some years ago, the chief of staff finally succeeded in quieting the disgruntled docs, surveyed the room, and said: "Gentlemen, there's a lot of class being displayed here today--all of it low." That's what came to mind when I saw the architect's rendering of the Lott center. A Lott of class, all low.

Remember, however, that the design has to be approved by somebody. The final product is not necessarily the fault of the architect. Sort of like a tatoo artist who is not reponsible for the content of the customer's tatoo, or a house painter who is not responsible for the garrish blue color chosen by the homeowner.

It's a go!

Trent Lott was on the 6:00 news talking about the new building and congratulating Southern Miss. University officials say they will break ground as soon as Senator Lott is available.

No one bothered to thank all of the chairs who made this possible.

This may be a dumb question, but why would Trent Lott want a building on the USM campus when he is an Ole Miss grad? Does anyone know the history on this?

Perhaps because there is already a Trent Lott Institute (with building) at Ole Miss. I would suspect that, after his alma mater, he likes the idea of having a building named after him at the university in "his" end of the state.

Quite a lott of pork going into a facility that has 3 faculty and 30 students. I guess the Lott Center is like the "Field of Dreams." Build It, and They Will Come.
