CAMPUS STREETS SURROUNDING SOUTHERN MISS TO BE RENAMED BY UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY
HATTIESBURG-- Several streets around The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus will soon be renamed with the help of students, alumni, faculty and staff.
“We want our street names to bring back memories and have significance to the university community,” said Bob Pierce, director of the Southern Miss Alumni Association.
Streets currently under consideration for name changes are East Memorial Drive, West Memorial Drive, Southern Drive, University Boulevard, Sunset Drive, Coliseum Drive and a portion of Pearl Street from Sunset Drive to Ross Boulevard.
Anyone interested in submitting names for consideration should send suggestions via e-mail to alumni@usm.edu. Submissions will be accepted through Dec. 1.
Heck, that is a good idea. While we're really at it, we should definitely change the name of the school, and most obviously drop the whole university thing. The kinfolk are right, welcome to Hardy Street High.
One street should be Thames avenue and it should symbolically be a dead end.
The term "streets" does not fully express the magnitude of what USM is all about. Each roadway and alley should be called a "boulevard," not a "street." That would look very good in our publicity material, position annoncements, and departmental letterhead.
Yet another fascist move--rename everything to correspond with your "vision." There are lots of towns in Latin America with streets that have been renamed for whoever came into power, and the people there just keep calling then by the old names (confuses the heck out of tourists).
I think maybe D.C. Berry, Noel Polk, and Myron Henry could also be good choices.
The street running North-South by the administration building should be named "My Way Drive." The street running East West by the administration building should be named "Or Else Lane."
Given those names, it would be easy to direct visitors to the Dome: "At the intersection of My Way Or Else."

And there could be a sign pointing towards 49. So then it could be My Way or the Highway.
The news release says that seven USM streets will be soon renamed. That's a high number. Giving university buildings and streets permanent names is a major endeavor. Seven streets seems like too many for one administration to name. It seems to me that some of those streets should be saved for future administrations.
I do wonder about East and West Memorial Drives. Memorial of what? Is there not something we're supposed to be remembering? I'd want to know the history on those two especially.

Maybe it's something we're not supposed to remember! But yours is a good question. I'd like to know the answer also. My uneducated guess is that it pertains to something military.

Didn't you read 1984 in high school?
The systematic assault on "institutional memory" at the University of Southern Mississippi is one of the most disturbing aspects of the current administration. For a while, I thought it was simply a matter of an administration eliminating individuals who knew where the bodies were buried.
Now I'm not so sure. I think the whole issue here is commercialization. Since USM has no real "tradition" & it's history is so easily pitched into a "memory hole" & rewritten, there are big opportunities to sell a "place in history." Forget any "history" & "tradition." Times are tough. Any avenue that can be taken to generate a fast buck needs to be explored.
If a donor offered $500K cash to rename a street "Fire Shelby Road" or "Frank & Gary Circle," how fast would the Mr. Lassen have the contract ready?
